Good support for theoretical Physics ...

This book contains lots of subjects all of great interest for students in theoretical Physics. The right way to read this book is just to read those chapters one is interested in. The level is at advanced-undergraduate / graduate. Tensors are treated in a self contained way, as differential forms, and connection with Physics is always present. A good way to learn more from that stuff is to couple this book with Frankel's "The Geometry of Physics" (which goes more far by treating homology, cohomology, De Rahm theorem ...). One thing one could point out is that Aldrovandi's formalism is not the most recent (compared to Frankel's) but this is just a small problem for those who are used to maths. This book is a useful reference and matemathical support for those learning on QFT and GR. I particularly appreciated the part about tensor fields, differential forms and integration of differential forms (Very well written !). Sections about chains, homology, De Rham's theorem, Betti numbers ... are also quite good. The last few chapters contain some original and interesting parts about GR compared to Gauge Theory, dS and AdS spaces, even if this section seems to me a bit shortly written. The book contains also some other stuff that you will not need immediatelly for QFT and GR (Morse theory, ...).

A must have book if you truly want to master fear.

Far too many of us go through life afraid to move forward and become locked in a pattern of fear that blocks us from achieving our goals and dreams. For those of us who are willing to break that paralytic, emotional pattern, Dr. Maurer presents a “more than how to book” that delineates a way to move into the freedom of who you truly are as a powerful, and creative individual. He systematically, and cogently, explains the process of fear and how to move through it in ways that are simple, clear, and that can lay the groundwork for a confident and meaningful life. I highly recommend this book.

good book on how to harness Fear to achieve success -- its been explained first as to what unnatural ways we(most of us) are right now using to deal with fear -- and then a solution has been proposed which is more in tune with our natural instincts

its been elaborated on how this solution can be used effectively at the work place , in relationships

overall I recommend this book to anyone who would like to deal with fear in a natural/proven way.

An outstanding resource

I have been a follower of Dr. Maurer's work for many years now. After reading his first book (One Small Step Can Change Your Life), I followed up with him to interview him for a book that I was writing at the time (The Law of Attraction in Action) and subsequently have shared the podium with him at several speaking events and have hosted him as a speaker at several events for my clients and for my own business. By way of full disclosure, Dr. Maurer met his co-author, Michelle Gifford, through one of my events, as well. I have long been fans of their work and this new book only increases my regard for their expertise and treatment of this particular topic.

I have eagerly awaited this book due to the importance of this particular topic and because Dr. Maurer's work is so important to the fields of Positive Psychology and Peak Performance. Mastering Fear proposes that stress doesn't actually exist--that stress is simply a term we use for our (often unhealthy) response to the very natural phenomenon of fear in our lives. The book makes the case, through great research, storytelling, examples, and exercises, that we can create a much healthier relationship with fear, and thereby favorably and measurably impact our work, relationships, health, and other areas of our life. By identifying the fear triggering an emotional response and engaging in healthier, more productive ways of dealing with that fear (e.g., the simple but often overlooked act of reaching out for support), we can not only create better outcomes in all of those areas of our lives (and more), but also have a better experience emotionally and in practical ways as we navigate the many unexpected things that occur in our lives.

I was struck by the research basis for the book, which clearly points to how resilience can be cultivated and how we can take simple but powerful steps to make a positive difference in our own lives, and in the life experiences of our partners, children, teams, and communities. I was particularly interested in his discussion of "the drama triangle," which gives great insight into what happens during interpersonal conflict and the options we have for addressing some of the root causes of that conflict that are either sparked by or fueled by fear. I am on my second reading of this book and have already identified additional points that are making a difference in my personal life and in my professional life as an author and speaker on the topics of Positive Psychology.

I cannot recommend this book (and Dr. Maurer's previous two books) highly enough. It will be a trusted resource in my library for many years to come.

It may be of interest to other medical practitioners who want to gain some insight into contemporary hematology and coagulation testing (e.g., primary care physicians, specialists, etc.). The first author is relatively new to this field, but the senior author is widely published and internationally respected in the fields of clinical chemistry and toxicology.

Features: The 17 chapters cover most aspects of laboratory hematology, hematopathology, and coagulation. Each chapter follows a standard format of an introduction, explanation of standard tests/interpretations/processes, ending with a bulleted list of key points. This is a pretty comprehensive book, written in a no-frills, concise manner. I agree with the authors if the reader knows the majority of the material in this book, s/he is ready for the American Board of Pathology exam. There are no photomicrographs and only one flow cytometry figure in the book, instead readers are referred to online image banks for examples. Chapter 17, which discusses sources of error in hematology and coagulation, is relatively unique and enlightening. Experienced hematology laboratory directors would find this chapter useful.

About the Author
Amer Wahed is a graduate of Medicine, training initially in Internal Medicine at Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, England. He subsequently trained in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School. After working for several years in a private setting, he joined the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Texas-Houston Health Sciences Center. Currently he is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry and Immunology at Memorial-Hermann Hospital at the Texas Medical Center. He is also the Associate Director of the Pathology Residency Program at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School. Dr. Wahed has a strong interest in teaching and is actively involved in the education of medical students, graduate students, residents, and fellows. He has been recognized for his teaching contributions through awards from his department, as well as the Office of the Dean. He is also active in mentoring pathology residents in research and has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Amitava Dasgupta received his PhD degree in Chemistry from Stanford University and his fellowship training in Clinical Chemistry from the Laboratory Medicine Department of the University of Washington School of Medicine at Seattle. He is a tenured Full Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center located at the Texas Medical Center at Houston. Dr. Dasgupta has published 210 scientific papers, written many invited review articles, and has edited, co-edited or written 15 books. He is on the Editorial Board of five major medical journals including American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Clinica Chimica Acta and Journal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis.

I highly recommend this book for any pathology resident trying to do ...

I highly recommend this book for any pathology resident trying to do well on their hematopathology rotation or studying for the boards. It is concise, high-yield, and easy to read. The “Key Points” section at the end of each chapter are especially well-done, and are exactly what you need to know for exams.

I want more

This book was so powerful that I couldn't finish it in one sitting. A series of stunning but concise statements is strong enough to leave you speechless and still wondering. Deeply introspective and beautifully written. I just wish it was easier to draw connections between the characters.. Almost into a story. Also, because it was so good, I wish it was longer so that I can build a stronger connection with each of the characters and really understand where they're coming from. Without all of that background info, it's harder to empathize with them and becomes tempting to just criticize their flaws. However, those flaws were very relatable and even universal.

Overall, a huge congrats to Ms. Nashiha Pervin on her first publication!

Really Enjoyed This Book

This is a pretty powerful book that is really well written. When I first started reading it, I thought it was a collection of short interviews in which the writer got people to open up about their personal flaws. Then I started to realize that the stories were connected and I couldn't put it down. I read the entire book in one sitting. I grew quite fond of a few of the characters and was anxious to see what fates awaited them. The story behind the bloody hand print on the cover almost made me throw my kindle. Great read!!!

Don Quijote is the book I always meant to read in college! Back then, my Spanish was pretty decent, but today... well, it's not what it used to be. But I got another chance, thanks to this innovative idea.

You can think of this book as an intermediate course/refresher in Spanish. Basically, you get the English version and the Spanish version in one book, and you can choose how much of both you want or need. The Author's Introduction comes first, translated into English, and then it's like a Choose Your Own Adventure: Do I want the Author's Introduction in Spanish? Do I want to jump to the Dedication in Spanish? Or maybe the Dedication in English? At the end of each section, you can make the choice based on how your reading is going.

I love this idea, and I really hope to see more interactive translations like this in the future!
