A light read

This is the first book I have read in the Warder series. I didn't even know it was part of a series. But despite the fact that I may have read it out of order, I didn't get lost. The author does a very good job of introducing the reader to the story as the story progresses. There were only a few things that weren't explained. Likely because this one is in the middle of the series.

I have read a few of Calmes's other books and I liked this one more than her others. I like stories with a good plot and a small ratio of smut. Even better is if there is no smut at all as almost every male romance story out there has a lot of that in it. But it is hard to find one that has a strong plot with a romance in the background. Calmes's other stories have been heavy on the smut to plot ratio too which if why I liked this one. The smut is still there but it is slightly toned down and the characters don't act like horny, puberty stricken teenagers several times a chapter. In this regard, the book was a refreshing change compared to her other books. However, even though there is a plot, there isn't much of one. This book was definitely written more for the bed action than on creating a strong story. I still found it fun to read though.

Another pleasant surprise was the changing of roles in the bedroom. I have not read all of Calmes's books, but in the ones I have read, her characters have either been top or bottom. They never switched places. They were also rarely tender with each other. And that bugged me! In this one, the characters actually switch places and their activities aren't always fast and punishing.

Calmes's grammar didn't improve much in this book. She sometimes remembered not to comma splice in her compound sentences and she never used contractions except when one of the characters were speaking. However, the grammar still leaves a lot to be desired. I find it annoying that she is still mixing first and second person together by speaking to the reader and still mixing past and present tense in her sentences.

This book was fun but it is no literary masterpiece. I'm giving this book two stars because it wasn't fantastic enough to leave a solid, lasting impression on me and the writing style, grammar and plot and character development need a lot of work. If I was to give the book a generous rating based on how much I liked the book and not on quality, it would get a three. A book I would give a five to is one I would read over again, several times, without getting tired of it. And while I may read this one again one day, I don't have the burning desire to. A good example of a very memorable, fantastic male romance book with lots of re-readability value is the Rifter series by Ginn Hale.

Over all, this book was like candy. It was fun to read but didn't have much subsistence. I would suggest it though for someone looking for a bit of light reading.

Very enjoyable.

This book was my introduction to this author and this series. And what an introduction it was. I knew what the genre was, that was clearly labeled, so no surprises there. For me the greatest part was the love story. These two young men beginning a relationship and that always involves give and sacrifice for any couple. But as Simon comes to understand the love that Leith has for him and how his for Leith is growing and the willingness to move out of the normal comfort zones and move into areas that will make this a strong and lasting one is touching.

The fact that he does this while in a dimension of hell, Leith has been transformed into a barbarian, who knows that Simon is his heart, and the gorgeous kyrie Raeph has to give him directions on how to get out of hell and save his friends made for an entertaining and interesting read. Enjoy it so much I bought the rest of the series.

Of the six books in the series, this is one of only two that are told from the hearth's point of view. Leith is one of the characters that you don't learn as much about in the other books in the series, so it was a nice intro to him.

I noticed there was not a review for this book. I want you to trust that the series is a good one, and Calmes is a great writer. I enjoyed Simon and Leith. The book is a great price and a reasonable length for that price. You get a moment to revisit some of the characters and see the beginning possibilities of new relationships for others. It is definitely a worth read. The heat between the two main characters is nice and the descriptions allow you to truly visualize them. The world building is unique as well. I enjoyed this book as a nice breather and believe you will, too.

The fifth chapter treats the theory of imperfect gases and condensation, largely following Mayer's theory but also giving some new, alternative derivations and discussing in the final section Yang and Lee's theory. The sixth chapter is devoted to a discussion of distribution functions and the theory of the liquid state. Chapter 7 deals with nearest-neighbor (Ising) lattice statistics, while the last chapter discusses free-volume and hole theories of liquids and solids.
Written primarily for graduate students and researchers in chemistry, physics and biology who already have some acquaintance with statistical mechanics, the book lends itself to use as a text for a second course in statistical mechanics, as a supplement to a first course or for self-study or reference. The level is neither introductory nor highly sophisticated; the author has generally emphasized material that is not available in other books. In addition, selected bibliographic references at the end of each chapter suggest supplementary reading.

A must-read in stat mech

This is the Dover edition of the 1956 book by Hill on Statistical Mechanics (it was followed by companion book in 1960, also available from Dover). The book is a readable exposition of the foundations and most important results of statistical mechanics. The intended audience is advanced students of statistical mechanics, however, some previous acquaintance with statistical mechanics is recommended. His follow up book, An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics (I've heard it referred to by some as ``baby Hill'') is a better starting point for the first-time student.

The book treats a small number of subjects (there are 8 chapters in total) but in detail (this review is based on the chapters I have read so far, 1-4 and 7).

The fundamentals are developed in chapters 1-4 which establish the ensembles, first from the classical Gibbs perspective (chapter 1), then from a quantum mechanical point of view (chapter 2). In chapter 3 Hill develops a generalized ensemble from which the microcanonical, canonical and grand canonical follow as special cases. This part ends with the discussion of fluctuations in chapter 4. The remaining four chapters are devoted to general applications: the treatment of imperfect gases and condensation (Mayer's cluster expansion), distribution functions, and lattice statistics.

Overall the book is very readable by anyone who has some previous exposition to statistical mechanics and the basic mathematical tricks in working with partition functions. There are some small problems. Chapter 7 (nearest neighbor lattice statistics) is uncharacteristically disorganized and unbalanced with respect to explanations relative to chapter 1-4. Notation is not always helpful. A large number of variables in bold and script letters make the reading of equations a chore. This chore becomes even more laborious by the small type of the book (I estimate that the main font is point size 10 or 9, if not less). Dover would do scientists a huge favor by reissuing the book in larger format.

Hill's strength is in not over-explaining things: all mathematical detail is made available to the reader who must then use make use of his/her own brain to make sense of it. For the most part this works well for anyone willing to put the effort (for those who want some guidance in reading about statistical mechanics, an excellent companion is Pathria's book).

This text is a classic. It is a bit dated, but the clarity of the presentation and the completeness make it a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of anyone working in theoretical biophysics, physical chemistry or molecular physics.

`This book landed on my desk this morning and I just had to include it! It is aimed at LMs, TAs and teachers and is a really useful resource. It comes with a CD ROM (Adobe Acrobat needed) and is part of Lucky Duck Publications, which is well-known for producing quality resources in the field of emotional literacy. There are thirteen chapters on: Emotional Intelligence, Self-Esteem, Anger Management, Bereavement, Self-harm, Drug Awareness, Bullying, Behaviour Change, Transition, Attendance, School Refusal and Punctuality, Revisions and Friendship.

Many of you will recognise these themes as areas in which you work and may already have resources for these areas but these are conveniently put together in one book. It is aimed at pupils at the upper end of KS2 up to KS4. Each chapter contains information around each topic, plus photocopiable worksheets such as emotions cards, stories, ideas for games and activities and links to websites. Most of these can be adapted to suit the needs of different schools and to facilitate working within the school's policies. I would especially recommend this book to people who are new to these roles or who are setting up emotional literacy groups within schools for the first time, but established groups would also find them useful' - Teaching Assistant News

Learning mentors are well established in our schools as a skilled and resourceful adjunct to the staff group. They bring a varied background of training and expertise, often adding additional accomplishments to those of the teaching staff.

This publication is produced by two colleague mentors who have researched the information and produced the resources they needed to do their job well. The book provides a factual introduction to the range of special needs they encounter amongst the students they support:

Rhonda Twidle is a trainee Probation Office in West Yorkshire. Prior to this, she has four years' experience of supporting young people with social and emotional difficulties in the roles of Learning Mentor in Leeds and as a Support Worker in Tyneside.

About the Author
Kathy Hampson completed her PhD at Leeds University in 2012, under the supervision of Professor Adam Crawford and Dr Emma Wincup. She�worked full time for the Youth Offending Service during her studies, writing several books on working with young people in this time. She�left Leeds to become the North Wales Resettlement Broker Co-ordinator in 2013.

Although Tharoor wrote most of these 15 precocious tales in his teens and early 20s, they display the gift for sparkling social satire and sharp observation of life in India that he brought to The Great Indian Novel and Show Business. Several of them are perfect. Whether depicting a self-important police inspector who bungles a homicide investigation ("The Political Murder"), an orphan who feels manipulated by a child relief agency ("The Five-Dollar Smile"), or a college student who survives a scooter crash in which his friend dies ("The Pyre"), Tharoor has a fine eye for caste and class consciousness. He mocks India's "mod sophisticates," ad executives and bureaucrats. Irreverent tales of college life mingle with intense family dramas: a 17-year-old carries on a brief, torrid affair with his married "Auntie Rita" and "The Professor's Daughter" is brutally beaten by her old father because of her presumed flirtations. Tharoor, who now lives in New York, sets his funniest tale in the U.S. Fittingly, "The Solitude of the Short Story Writer" shows the protagonist scandalizing his friends by writing acerbic, revelatory stories about them.

Most of the tales in this collection were written when Tharoor ( Show Business , LJ 5/15/92) was in his late teens and early twenties. Though some of the subject matter is quite adult in nature, the presentation is charmingly naive, exhibiting an unpracticed skill and freshness that recalls creative writing class assignments. Making the best possible use of Tharoor's then-limited experience, these deeply personal stories depict the joys and sorrows of youth and the lessons learned while attaining maturity in locations ranging from Bombay to New York. Recommended for public libraries.

A collection of early stories--most written when the Indian- born Tharoor (Show Business, etc.) was in his late teens and early 20s--that are more a foretaste of the good things to come than accomplishments in themselves. With the exception of ``The Solitude of the Short-story Writer,'' the pieces here are set in India, where cosmopolitan city-dwellers may have a lingering sentimental affection for the countryside they long ago left but are seduced by an increasingly Western culture. Two stories--``The Village Girl'' and ``City Girl''--are updated versions of the old children's tale of ``The Country Mouse and the Town Mouse'': a sophisticated male student (in the first story) and a sophisticated young woman (in the second), both reluctantly visiting their respective family's old country homes, are taught some surprising--and profound--lessons by the countryfolk they thoughtlessly seduce. The most mature piece here is that of the title, in which a lonely orphan--the ``poster- child'' of an organization raising money for the institution--is determined to visit the family in America that have ``adopted'' him and writes deliberately touching letters to them. The letters result in a ticket for a three-week visit, but on the flight, surrounded by strangers and unfamiliar objects, the boy suddenly experiences an intense loneliness: ``he was alone, lost somewhere between a crumpled magazine clipping and the glossy brightness of a color photograph.'' Other notables are: ``The Boutique'' (a son witnesses the humiliation of his mother by a group of urban sophisticates); ``Auntie Rita (a young man's affair with his aunt in the city ``becomes a ticket back home, but not just to the life he had known at home, new worlds beckoned''); and the bittersweet ``The Death of a Schoolmaster'' (a politically ambitious son causes inadvertent harm). A very compelling read, this book by Shashi Tharoor is a collection of short stories written by the author in his teens and early 20s.This book is a beautiful collection of writings by Tharoor before the well-known "The Great Indian Novel" and is in a different genre from the author's other books.
Each story starts with a note by the author disussing the mindset in which the story was written, and the age at which he wrote it, thus giving the reader a better insight into the story.
The stories are diverse in nature and use the backdrop of India to give the reader a view of the country and the people from a youth's point of view. The title story is a sensitive portrayal of an orphan who is the face on the poster of a fund-raiser campaign for the orphanage. "The boutique" is another touching story revealing the discrimination that soceity imposes on its classes and its impact on a young boy.
The stories in this book impress with their simplicity and subtleness. Most of all, it brought back memories of youth in me. A book I enjoyed immensely!
