Plate Tectonic Theory Falsified
By Amazon Customer
The ocean floors of the world, which constitute 70% of the earth’s solid surface, were largely unexplored between 1957 and 1970, when the plate tectonic theory was developed. It was frequently said that we knew more about the surface of Mars than we did about the ocean floor. As a result, the plate tectonic theory, which primarily attempts to explain features on the ocean floor, was developed in the blind, without the data needed to formulate it or test it. Why then was plate tectonics readily accepted, and why is it considered by polling as the most significant theory of the 1900s?

A Brewing Crisis. Before the plate tectonic theory, the only theory that attempted to explain earth’s major surface features was the continental drift theory. It claimed, as its name implies, that the amazing and obvious jig-saw fit of the east coast of the Americas with the west coast of Europe and Africa is because the continents drifted apart. Unfortunately, no one could explain why a supercontinent broke apart and how the continental-size pieces could move—plow through thousands of miles of solid rock. Why couldn’t earth-science experts explain what the public could plainly see must have happened?

Before plate tectonics, geology professors also reported how embarrassed they felt walking into class knowing students would ask obvious questions the professors could not answer. So when the plate tectonic theory was finally proposed, it was greeted with great fanfare, because earth’s features might be explained by exciting new mechanisms: seafloor spreading, mountain formation, mantle circulation, subduction, hot spots, transform faults, and flipping magnetic poles—none of which had ever been seen or measured—only inferred with vivid imagination. Students seldom questioned these claims; that might show disrespect or a poor understanding, preventing students from receiving their degrees.

The year 1957-1958 was designated, with much publicity, as the “International Geophysical Year,” a year in which scientists in 67 cooperating countries would conduct studies addressing festering questions about the earth. Adding to the drama, the Soviet Union placed Sputnik in orbit in 1957, a monumental achievement that sent fear throughout the free world. The United States Congress, fearful that the United States was falling behind in science and technology, threw vast amounts of money into several scientific efforts, one of which was to better understand the ocean floor.

Smoot Speaks Out—With Data. One U.S. Navy scientist, N. Christian Smoot, an evolutionist, spent 32 years precisely mapping the ocean floor. His important book, Tectonic Globaloney: Closing Arguments (Author House Press, 2012), describes discoveries on the ocean floor that falsify plate tectonics. Smoot, a veteran of 67 cruises, was responsible for declassifying some of this data for use outside the U.S. Navy. He says he “devoutly believed” the plate tectonic theory, but now knows it is “baloney” or “tectonic globaloney.” Based on features he sees on the ocean floor, Smoot concludes that subduction does not occur, and the seafloor is not spreading.

Below are his words from the back cover of his book:

"Forty-five years after the synthesis of the plate tectonic hypothesis, much newer and better information has been gathered by the seagoers of the world [and by satellites]. Contrary to popular opinion among earth scientists, the purveyors of plate tectonics are the present-day snake oil salesmen."

"[Plate tectonics] is fraught with misinformation and misconceptions. It is in need of a massive make-over. Midocean ridge spreading does not occur universally, especially in Iceland and the North Pacific basin. Deep earthquakes do not define a descending slab; in fact, do not even occur in most places along the trenches. Therefore, subduction does not occur. Continental drift is a figment of overly active imaginations."

"Fracture zones [distorted in National Geographic maps in a way that supports plate tectonic], rather than showing the direction of seafloor spreading, leave nothing more than a pattern of at least four different directions on the ocean floor as they intersect in a random fashion.
Plate tectonics does not work."

While Smoot knows enough about the ocean floor to falsify plate tectonics, he unfortunately is not a skillful enough writer to explain it to the average reader and put it in a format that will attract readers. For example, this book has no index, is filled with acronyms, and most of the art work has been pulled off the internet, rather than tailored for readers and the message Smoot is trying to convey. This 2012 edition is a great improvement over his 2004 edition, which had a smaller format, and figures too small and cluttered.

Historians of science know, as Thomas Kuhn explained in his classic “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions,” that a reigning theory is not rejected unless an alternative theory is simultaneously presented that explains all that the old theory did plus the anomalies that contradict the reigning paradigm—in this case the plate tectonic theory. Unfortunately, Smoot seems to be unaware of an alternative to plate tectonics which is consistent with the Navy’s sea-floor data and the other scientific evidence. The ridiculous alternatives he considers require an expanding or shrinking earth—both of which seemingly violate the law of the conservation of mass. I also suspect from his comments that his scientific breadth is limited to geology and the ocean floor. The subject is much bigger—interdisciplinary. Hopefully, Smoot will correct these problems and come out with a third edition. Millions of people need to understand (not just read) his important message.

Best book ever on the subject of plate tectonics!
By DickMacgurn
If you think you know how tectonics work, you need to read this book to find out what really happened. This guy Smoot was there when the data was being collected and he saw first hand how it was literally and figuratively distorted to to fit the consensus model that we learn in school. I predict Smoot's work will eventually be recognized as the gospel truth and plate tectonics will go down as just another massive blunder in scientific history.

This updated edition provides an account of what makes this popular play both innocent and dangerous. There is a section on recent critical, stage and film interpretations of the play, an updated reading list and a new appendix on an early court performance of As You Like It in 1599. This is a thorough text on object-oriented software development emphasizing large-scale applications and capitalizing on the increasing popularity of UML and client-server techniques. The book addresses the latest developments in database technology including object-relational databases. In this context, the Internet-driven shift from thick-clients back to server-based computing is acknowledged. The analysis and design principles discussed in the text apply equally well to conventional client-server solutions and modern component-based distributed applications.

From the Back Cover

The development of a software system takes place in three iterative and incremental phases — analysis, design and implementation. This book describes the methods and techniques used for analysis and design, with implementation issues addressed to the extent to which they must be considered in the design. The text concentrates on object-oriented software development, using the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The book uses the teach-by-example principle — all concepts are exemplified and the running case studies present integrated solutions.

The focus of the book is on developing large-scale, client/server, multi-tier object-oriented information systems. The client is a workstation with a GUI and the server manages a database. The client, server and middle-tier processes communicate via object messaging. The server database can be relational, object-relational or purely object-oriented. The book identifies ways to:

  • integrate analysis and design models;
  • harness the complexity of large system models;
  • improve software architectures;
  • promote layered structuring of objects;
  • understand consequences of reckless modeling;
  • conduct testing and manage change;
  • build maintainable and scalable systems.

The book can be used for undergraduate courses in computer science or information systems such as systems analysis, systems design, software engineering, databases and abject technology, as well as being a valuable resource for software projects. The book has also been written for professionals developing business information systems, such as IT managers, application developers, consultants, analysts, designers, programmers, testers, software engineers, systems integrators and educators. The text is accompanied by a comprehensive website that contains a wealth of additional material for instructors, students and professionals.

Outline of the book

The development of an information system (IS) - from its inception to the first release to stakeholders comprises three iterative and incremental phases: analysis, design, and implementation. This book describes the methods and techniques used in the first two phases. The implementation issues are only addressed to the extent to which they need to be considered in the design phase. Testing and change management are addressed in the final chapter.

The text concentrates on object-oriented software development. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is used to capture modeling artifacts. Emphasis is placed on the development by elaboration where the same modeling language (UML) is used throughout the development lifecycle. Analysts, designers, and programmers 'speak' the same language, although perhaps use the dialects (profiles) of the language fitting their individual needs.

The early applications of object technology targeted graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and focused on the speed of developing new systems and the speed of program execution. In this book, I emphasize the application of object technology in IS development. The challenge is the large volume of data, complex data structures, shared access to information by many concurrent users, transaction processing, changing requirements, etc. The main advantage of object technology in IS environments is in facilitating software maintenance and scalability.

Developing information systems is synonymous with doing analysis and design 'in-the-large'. No IS project can succeed without following strict development processes and without understanding the underlying software architectures. The development is large-scale, object-oriented, iterative and incremental. The software architecture is based on a client/server solution, where the client is a workstation with GUI and the server stores a database. Client and server run in separate processes and communicate via object messaging. A server database can be relational, object-relational, or purely object-oriented.

The book proposes a detailed approach to analysis and design of information systems with UML. The book identifies ways to:

  • harness the complexity of large system models;
  • improve software architectures;
  • facilitate software readability, maintainability and scalability;
  • promote layered structuring of objects;
  • handle component integration;
  • improve modeling of collaboration between GUI and persistent database objects, etc.
  • Distinguishing features

    This book has a number of features which, when combined, create a unique offering. The 'teach-by-example' approach is the cornerstone of the text. The main discussion is based on examples and a guided tutorial drawn from five application domains University Enrollment, Video Store, Contact Management, Telemarketing, and Online Shopping. The examples are independent. They build up into case studies that can be extended or diversified through questions formulated at the end of most chapters (Exercise Questions). Some exercises refer to a sixth application domain — Advertising Expenditure Measurement.

    To facilitate self-education, the guided tutorial (Online Shopping) and the case studies are formulated using the question-and-answer principle. A separate section at the beginning of the book, 'Book Activity Diagrams' offers diagrams that link the question-and-answer steps used in the tutorial and in the case studies. The book activity diagrams can serve as an alternative table of contents for examples scattered in the text.

    The book discusses principles, methods and techniques of good analysis and good design. Special attention is paid to the design phase. Design is not treated as a straightforward transformation from analysis. The book acknowledges the difficulties and intricacies of large-scale object-oriented client/server system development. In many ways, the book takes a fresh look at the 'design-in-the-large,' at iterative and incremental development of large systems, and at capabilities and limitations of tools and methods in large software production.

    A unique character of the book comes from a balanced blend of practical explanation and theoretical insight. A major premise is to avoid unnecessary over-complication, but without the loss of rigor. The book 'speaks' from experience. Topics that are not relevant to industry or that are only of research interest have been excluded.

    The book is on the 'cutting-edge' of information technology. It uses the latest standard in system modeling — UML. It addresses the latest developments in database technology, including object-relational databases. In this context, the Internet-driven shift from 'thick-clients' (i.e. large desktop computers) back to server-based computing is acknowledged. The analysis and design principles discussed in the text apply equally well to conventional client/server solutions and to modern component-based distributed applications.

    Software development is not amenable to 'black-white,' 'true-false,' 'zero-one' solutions. Good software solutions come from good business analysts and system designers/programmers, not from blindly applied algorithms. A policy of the book is to warn the reader about potential difficulties that the advocated approach cannot entirely resolve. In consequence it is hoped that readers will apply their acquired knowledge with care and will not assume unrealistic expectations of the ease with which the approach can be applied (and thereby, possibly, fail more dramatically).

    In summary, the distinguishing features of the book are:

  • The book relates the theories to reality — in the form of practical problems and limitations, which will have to be addressed when applying the approach 'in the field.'
  • The book gives special attention to the design phase. Design is not treated as a straightforward transformation from analysis and it acknowledges the difficulties and intricacies of large-scale client/server system development.
  • A wealth of nontrivial examples and exercises with all solutions are included in the book or the supplementary materials. The Instructor's Manual is not an afterthought — it has been written concurrently with the text and is meticulous.
  • Intended readership

    In tune with the growing demand for university courses to be more relevant to industry practice, this textbook is aimed at students and practitioners alike. This has been a difficult task but, it is hoped, it has been successfully achieved. To ensure a lasting educational benefit, the implementation aspects of software development are discussed in non-vendor-specific terms (although commercial CASE tools have been used in illustrations and solutions).

    The book is aimed at computer science and information systems curricula. As it contains both 'high-level' system modeling topics and 'low-level' user interface and database design issues, the book should be attractive to courses in system analysis, system design, software engineering, databases, object technology, and to software project courses that require students to develop a system following the development lifecycle: from requirements determination to GUI and database implementation. The book is designed for a one-semester course, but it can potentially be used over two one-semester courses — one on requirements analysis and the other on system design.

    For the practitioners' audience, the presented theories are related to realities. Most problem statements, examples and exercises are drawn from the consulting practice of the author. We have adopted a policy of warning the reader of potential difficulties or limitations with advocated approaches. The following categories of practitioners are likely to benefit most from the book: business and system analysts, designers, programmers, system architects, project leaders and managers, reviewers, testers, technical writers, and industry trainers.

    Organization of the book

    The book provides comprehensive coverage of object-oriented analysis and design of information systems. The material is presented in an order consistent with modern development processes. The book consists of ten chapters. The coverage is balanced between analysis and design. The first five chapters address the analysis issues and the last five design and related considerations.

    Readers with varying amounts of background knowledge should be able to accommodate the text. Two chapters in the book are dedicated to an explanation of the underpinnings of analysis and design. The remaining chapters assume that the reader understands these underpinnings. The reader has a choice of studying the 'underpinnings' chapters in detail or of using them for review only.

    The book has several features to improve its clarity and to break the monotony of the text, in particular:

    • Sections are small.
    • Example and problem statements are placed in frames to distinguish them from the rest of the text. A graphical icon (see below) in the page margin also marks the beginning of each example.
    • Page margins are used to:
      - number and caption figures and tables,
      - show graphical icons to identify examples in the text and end-of-chapter questions
    Supplementary materials

    A comprehensive package of supplementary material is provided on the companion websites. Most of the web documents are freely available to the readers, but some material is password-protected for the benefit of instructors who have adopted the textbook in their teaching. I am truly indebted to all of them. An attempt to list all their names would be injudicious and impractical - please accept a blanket 'thank you.' However, even in the little space available for, acknowledgments, a few 'mates' must be mentioned:

    • Keith Mansfield, Mary Lince and the staff of Pearson Education — for recognizing the potential of this book and bringing it to the international market.
    • Stephen Bills and his staff at ACNielsen AdEx, Sydney, Australia, in particular: Steven Grotte, Kevin Mathie, Cameron Murray, James Rees, Jovan Spoa, and Eric Zurcher — for providing me with a production IS development testbed for this book.
    • My friends and colleagues in the Department of Computing at Macquarie University in Sydney Australia — for their support in the making of this book.
    • The formal (unknown to me) and informal reviewers — for invaluable feedback that has greatly benefited the book.
    • The staff at Rational, Oracle and Sybase — for providing me with the CASE and database software indispensable to the development of tutorials, case studies and examples.

    A UML and system development book with rich case studies
    By IL YEOL SONG
    Here is another excellent book on UML and system development using UML. I found this book highly practical, amusing, and instructive to read. Among the many excellent features of this book, I found the following five main strengths of the book. First, the book is rich with five case studies. Many books are rich in discussion, but weak in examples and case studies. This book uses five case studies. Some case studies are detailed while other case studies are short. Second, the book covers many advanced concepts, not usually covered by many other popular UML books in one volume. Those advanced features include reified classes, interface inheritance, implementation inheritance, extension inheritance, delegation, four types of aggregations, etc. Fourth, the book integrates other important parts of the system development activities such as user interface design, window navigation diagrams, database design for OO, OR, and relational databases. Fifth, therefore, the book covers all the life cycle of OO system developments, beginning from requirements modeling to user interface design, database design and testing. All these features make this book as an excellent choice for learning how to use UML to develop a complete system. One of several minor drawbacks is that some discussions appear in several different sections. This is due to a fairly long guided tutorial in Chapter 2.

    Developing Information Systems with UML
    By Jan Seruga
    This book covers a very important issue of applying the new modeling language UML to analyse and design object-oriented information systems. The author clearly explains problems facing developers of information systems and offers practical advice on analysing and designing systems. Examples are offered to illustrate each new concept as it is introduced. The content of the book is applicable to the creation of high- quality software system. The book offers a good source for the learning about UML. The book is an interesting and useful and I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about UML and object-oriented systems. It contains all you might want to know about software process: Requirements, Analysis, Design, Implementation and Test. Each chapter states the emphasis of the corresponding phase, describes the planning required for the phase. It mentions how this all fits in with the business case for the project and what the key deliverables are for each phase.

    Superficial, strained and vague
    By Andrey Taranov
    Honestly, I only endured this book to its middle. Superficial is the first characteristic that comes to mind. The author gives a brief description of object technology (which turnes out to be rather a list of UML concepts). A very short overview of requirement analysis follows - only "what", little of "why", almost nothing about "how". The requirements document template is here too, but you could really find better examples on the net, including real standards.
    But only in chapter 4 the book starts to blossom. You quickly find out, that the author has little if any real world design experience. Yes, the case-studies are a bit strained, still they are tolerable. But the author does poor modeling: his models are, well, arguable. Some classes 'follow' from the requirements without real explanation. And the naming is just plain ugly: consider a 'areYouOpen' method on a Course class and an 'areYouValid' method on a Student class.
    UML is covered, again, superficially. The short Fowler's book, UML Distilled, goes to greater depths on almost any topic (not to say Fowler *does* cover some experience in software process).
    If you need anything better, than a one term undergraduate learn-and-forget coursebook, don't bother.

    Arbitraging Japan: Dreams of Capitalism at the End of Finance, by Hirokazu Miyazaki

    For many financial market professionals worldwide, the era of high finance is over. The times in which bankers and financiers were the primary movers and shakers of both economy and society have come to an abrupt halt. What has this shift meant for the future of capitalism? What has it meant for the future of the financial industry? What about the lives and careers of financial operators who were once driven by utopian visions of economic, social, and personal transformation? And what does it mean for critics of capitalism who have long predicted the end of financial institutions? Hirokazu Miyazaki answers these questions through a close examination of the careers and intellectual trajectories of a group of pioneering derivatives traders in Japan during the 1990s and 2000s.

    Review
    "I heartily recommend [this book] to readers who are seriously interested in finance, market economics, or capitalism... brimming with lucid analysis and profound insight." (Social Science Japan Journal 2016-05-02)

    From the Inside Flap
    “Based on fieldwork with derivatives traders, Miyazaki’s Arbitraging Japan is a brilliant reexamination of finance that goes beyond simple sloganeering or calls for more (or less) regulation. Miyazaki’s compelling and timely contribution to the anthropology, sociology, and philosophy of finance illuminates its actors’ philosophical commitments and emphasizes its human and social aspects.”—Bill Maurer, Professor of Anthropology at University of California, Irvine

    "Miyazaki’s superbly crafted ethnography, Arbitraging Japan, follows the lives of a small group of Japanese arbitrageurs as they create instruments designed to exploit the relentless generation of pricing difference emanating from the heart of financial markets. What starts as a technical exegesis on the operation of finance, yields a vibrant account of the dreams and the predicaments of our time. The narrative is restrained, perhaps even understated, and yet what is achieved is exhilarating."—Doug Holmes, author of Integral Europe: Fast-Capitalism, Multiculturalism, Neofascism

    About the Author
    Hirokazu Miyazaki is Director of the East Asia Program and Professor of Anthropology at Cornell University.

    Started promising, but I was disappointed
    By Phil O.
    I like a good financial ethnography. I found arbitrage a fascinating centerpiece around which one could be made. I was very happy with the book as it started -- taking us inside not only a trading firm in Japan going into the 1990s, but to wider views of Japanese views of finance and innovation vis a vis world capitalism as the same were co-evolving. This gave insight into why Japan seemed world-beating in a time it overlaid refinements expertly onto others' inventions (such as autos), but then floundered in some ways as the turbulent, creatively destructive postwar world impinged on Japanese society, shaking many foundations. Many certitudes dissolved, and this book conveys that well. And, the book looks into the minds of actual arbitrageurs via interviews over long periods with the author. It shows how many of their dreams lost their ways, in the tumult of indilviduals' business lives, and their firms' adjustments.
    For me, a high point was in this quote, a fascinating mix of western style financial modeling with a sort of classically eastern poetic metaphor (at 55): " ... Koyama, a chemical engineer turned options trader, told me that he always tried to make profits in the way the market returns to equilibrium. He said, 'I do not care about whether the market goes up or down tomorrow, but I can tell when someone throws a stone into a pond. I can statistically deal with the way the waves disappear ....'"
    Now for the bad parts: (1) many phrases and concepts are repeated beyond tedium. Yes, arbitraging away opportunities erases them. Yes, this might mean some people make their own innovations, and even jobs, obsolete. Does repeating this (not new idea) literally many dozens of times make it more meaningful or effective? It is just silly, past a certain point of repetitions. I sense that the author ran out of "gas" in some way, perhaps out of creative metaphors to come to grips with the story as it progressed, and to develop insights further than this level. Perhaps the veering at the end into some extremely abstract intellectuals' work was an attempt to do this. But that was not a smooth transition, and the author's motives or process (despite all the introspection on display here) are not transparent. (2) Following certain individuals across a career path was revealing, and also showed how vapid and tedious and mediocre much of people's lives and thoughts are. Many of these subjects were very lopsidedly arbitrage-capable early on, yet silly in many of their personal ambitions, and dreams, and deeply mediocre as philosophers. Many veered ilnto bizarre belief systems and superstitions. Their overall depth of education, knowledge and reality testing seems questionable. One is left to wonder their later careers being largely series of failures has anything to do with that; we are left to guess. My guess is, yes. But this leave us wondering whether they are representative of financial professionals of their time and place. Again, we are guessing. Loose ends liket his abound. Who cares what a tiny sample of idiosyncratic and ultimately unsuccessful guys think about things they obviously are sketchy in? It is useful as a bit of anthropology, but only a sliver, an anecdotal sketch; not reliable as a basis for big picture thoughts about their cohort. (3) The author feels free to wander among all levels of (attempted) analysis, reflection, philosophizing, observations of other scholars' works, self-aware commentary, and to interpose some kind of ennui about it all, with little discipline or design. In this sense, the looseness of enthnography (as opposed to, say, a financial math textbook) has its downside, because it seems to be anything the author is mildly interested in, in relation to the general topic. It wanders and sort of evaporates into its own ennui, leaving a few interesting fragments. Don't get me wrong: I do not demand a simplistic thesis or structure; I do not need everything stripped down to some plot line or narrative with a clear "gimme" phrase to explain things. I think I'm about as tolerant of ambiguity and loose association as most anyone.
    Was it worth it? Yes, but the amount of filler and repetition and loose ends cancelled a lot of that value for me.

    About the Author
    I was born and raised in Cleveland, and started college at Bowling Green State University in 1984 majoring in creative writing. Eleven years later, I walked across the graduation stage to receive a PhD in math, a strange journey indeed. After two years at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, I came home to Ohio, accepting a tenure-track job at the Hamilton campus of Miami University. I’ve won a number of teaching awards in my career, and while maintaining an active teaching schedule, I now spend an inordinate amount of time writing textbooks and course materials. I’ve written or co-authored either seven or twelve textbooks, depending on how you count them, as well as several solutions manuals and interactive CD-ROMS. After many years as developmental math coordinator at Miami Hamilton, I share the frustration that goes along with low pass rates in the developmental math curriculum. Far too many students end up on the classic Jetson’s-style treadmill, with the abstract nature of the traditional algebra curriculum keeping them from reaching their goals. Like so many instructors across the country, I believe the time is right to move beyond the one-size-fits-all curriculum that treats students the same whether they hope to be an engineer or a pastry chef. “Because we’ve always done it that way” is NOT a good reason to maintain the status quo in our curriculum. Let’s work together to devise alternate pathways that help students to learn more and learn better while hastening their trip into credit-bearing math courses. Since my book (Math in Our World) is written for the Liberal Arts Math and Quantitative Literacy market, I think I’m in the right place at the right time to make a difference in the new and exciting pathways course. I’m in a very happy place right now: my love of teaching meshes perfectly with my childhood dream of writing. (Don’t tell my publisher this – they think I spend 20 hours a day working on textbooks – but I’m working on my first novel in the limited spare time that I have.) I’m also a former coordinator of Ohio Project NExT, as I believe very strongly in helping young college instructors focus on high-quality teaching as a primary career goal. I live in Fairfield, Ohio with my lovely wife Cat and fuzzy dogs Macleod and Tessa. When not teaching or writing, my passions include Ohio State football, Cleveland Indians baseball, heavy metal music, travel, golf, and home improvement.

    Awful design and poor business tactic.
    By Keegan
    Only a couple of problems from each section are listed in the back of the book, in an attempt to swindle you into a purchase of the solutions manual. The problems do not reference any examples, and the text is sometimes worded poorly. If you don't have to purchase this text for school, don't.

    Review
    Review of the hardback: 'The author has an easy style and a knack for clarity, picking out questions to answer and summarising key points without dull repetition. There are plenty of illustrations, including some excellent sketches and cartoons, and overviews of the types of images used ... Nicole Meyer-Vernet has done an excellent job of starting at the very beginning of a complex topic and talking the reader through to an understanding of current research questions, with good humour and a sharp eye for inconsistencies.' Geoscientist
