About the Author

Michael McCahill�was born in Glasgow and joined the School of Social Sciences at the University of Hull in September 2001, having completed his BA Sociology (First Class Honours), MA Criminology and PhD at Hull. Dr McCahill's�main research interests focus on the social impact of ‘new surveillance’ technologies and the mutually reinforcing relationship between crime, surveillance and media.�His books include The Surveillance Web (Willan) (winner of the British Society of Criminology book prize 2003) and Surveillance and Crime (Sage) with Roy Coleman.

Rachel L.�Finn�has lived in various cities in the USA, briefly in Ireland and in Manchester, UK for the last 10 years and�received�her BA in Sociology and Psychology from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA.�Dr Finn�started an MA/PhD programme at Northeastern University in Boston, USA and transferred to the University of Manchester where�she finished�her PhD. After�her PhD�Dr Finn�worked as a Research Associate at the University of Manchester and the University of Hull. Since 2010,�she�has been working for Trilateral Research & Consulting, a London-based research firm specializing in providing policy and regulatory advice about security, surveillance, privacy and the ethical impacts of new technologies.

This is the book for you if you are in Education

In education, we are always striving to be leaders in an out of the classroom. Sometimes we have an idea how to do this, and sometimes we not sure where to start. Start Right Now is what all educators need to read. It doesn't matter if you are a classroom teacher, coach, administrator or even in technology. Todd, Jeff and Jimmy bring you real ideas, real experience and great tactics and skills to your school. This is another winner from Burgess Publishing. It doesn't matter if you Teach like a Pirate, working through the Dunk Tank or are new or old in education. This is a must have book from classroom management to empathy. Pick it up.

Work in Education? This is a Must Read!

I figured that the incredible impact these authors had on me when I read "What Connected Educators do Differently" could not be matched. It turns out I was wrong. I thought this book would be a two-three night read, however, the text truly made me evaluate myself as an Educator via the four domains covered. Instead of a two-night read, it became almost a two-week read with plenty of highlights, and post-it notes because of the relevance of the text.
What separates this book from other educational books I have read is the authenticity included in the book. The authors have seen a tremendous number of administrators, teachers, and students in various geographic/SES environments. It's not a fairy tale about what educations should be, or a "woe is me" attitude for those in schools. The skills effective leaders have are conveyed clearly through four "Standards of Excellence". How do they support their opinions of what great leaders are in schools? By giving in-depth examples of people doing just that in their district! The focus at the end of each of the standards are the characteristics possessed by the great leaders in education, whether it be a principal, teacher, coach, etc.
As a teacher, this book was a beneficial read for me. Unfortunately not because it made me realize I'm a great leader, but rather just how far away I am from being close to those truly special individuals in Education. By the end of the book, I had gained additional resources, motivation with a sense of direction, and something that will be on my office desk as I will re-read my highlighted sections to remind myself of the numerous ways I can improve as a teacher and leader. The three gentlemen who wrote this book created something I would recommend to all of my colleagues I work with. These authors GET IT. It's clear they are in the schools and talking to educators.

True to their style this book proves to be an easy yet thought provoking read. Todd, Jeff and Jimmy take the meaning of leadership to a whole new level as they empower all educators to share in the responsibility of leading our schools. They remind us that our belief in excellence alone is not enough to make our schools great, we must take our beliefs and turn them into behaviors. This book provides useful strategies not only for developing yourself as a leader but also for identifying and developing leadership in others. Todd, Jeff and Jimmy identify four key “Standards 4 Excellence” providing the reader with a rationale - Why it matters, and behavior description - What it looks like, for each standard. The book is arranged in a practical, easy to follow format with each “Standards 4 Excellence” chapter concluding with Teach 4, Lead 4, Learn 4 - reflections from 4 teachers, 4 leaders and 4 QR codes that link to resources we all can learn from.

About the Author

Peter J. Ashenden received his B.Sc.(Hons) and Ph.D. from the University of Adelaide, Australia. He was previously a senior lecturer in computer science and is now a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide. His research interests are computer organization and electronic design automation. Dr. Ashenden is also an independent consultant specializing in electronic design automation (EDA). He is actively involved in IEEE working groups developing VHDL standards, is the author of The Designer's Guide to VHDL and The Student's Guide to VHDL and co-editor of the Morgan Kaufmann series, Systems on Silicon. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.

Good reference, not a great learning aid

This is a good VHDL Language Reference Manual. If you work with VHDL regularly, it is good to have on your bookshelf. It is a bit unwieldy in the way the constructs are defined, in that almost every definition of a VHDL construct relies on previously defined constructs. However, this is pretty common in LRMs for other languages as well. But if you're not used to reading things like this, it will be very confusing at first.

As other posters have noted, this is not a good book to learn to do VLSI design. It teaches you the syntax of how to write VHDL, and that's it. VHDL, even more so than many other languages, gives you plenty of rope with which to hang yourself. Just because you can write something a certain way in VHDL does not mean you should. Certain constructs which are allowed in VHDL will cause synthesis tools massive headaches. Nor does the book really teach you when to use procedural vs concurrent statements, or any other things you really need to know when using VHDL for its intended purpose: VLSI design.

Kindle Edition - Terrible Quality, Not Edited

This book seems to be a very thorough treatment of VHDL (I'm no expert, so take that as it is). The book is well written and cohesive. I've been using this book in various forms since college, and I'm *still* using it. I like it.

HOWEVER

Just like the second edition Kindle version (which I finally got fed up with and was refunded), the third edition was clearly not edited after the Kindle conversion process. Take as an example Table 2.2: This is supposed to be a table of the VHDL operators, but tell me, what does the operator "sllsrlorlror" do? According to the table, it is the "shift-left logicalshift-right logicalrotate leftrotate right"

Of course I understand what's going on here, and I can figure it out. But I shouldn't *have* to. It's wonderful that this book is available in the Kindle format. It's one more heavy book I don't have to lug around. But the quality is just not acceptable. This is a five-star book with one-star editing.

PLEASE fix this book!

Print of demand is utter garbage for this title

Blame the one star on MK, not the author. Print of demand is utter garbage for this title. When my eyes hurt as I try to read the text because characters look like they were printed on an old uncalibrated inkjet printer (i.e. the letters are pixelated/bleeding), it's because MK isn't doing its job. So, sorry, I had to put this book down and can't continue to read any of it. In fact, I'm going to start being very careful buying any book from MK moving forward. It's a shame because this is none of the author's fault, just the publishing house being cheap.

Witty, slick and sensual

Witty dialogue and a snappy pace make Project Virgin a real page turner. I sat here reading the book and imagining author Megan Crane laughing her head off as she wrote it. While there is no doubt that this is one of the wittiest books I've read in a while it is also sex on a stick, slick and carnal and exquisitely sensual.
Project Virgin is a very quick read so there's not a lot of time either for character development or to flesh out the plot yet you really don't get the feeling that this book has been rushed. The story unashamedly takes place over just a few days yet Megan Crane uses clever techniques such as a series of text messages to progress what is essentially a meeting of virtual strangers into a dinner date and a night of explosive sex.
The nice twist is that for Damon and Scottie, against the odds it seems that there just might be something more than sex. "I'm not a plumber," says Damon.

What happens when a dedicated first year law student tangles romantically with her powerful boss? Read Project Virgin to find out. Scottie Grey is smart and a dedicated lawyer. She's also a virgin. Currently she is helping legal eagle, Damon Patrick. He's the top lawyer in the firm, but of more interest to Scottie is his status as favorite sex symbol. Can he help her? This is a short and sexy story. The characters are feisty and the romance is red hot. I loved the interaction between these two as well as the snappy dialogue. I enjoyed this passionate romance.

Not My Cup of Tea But Good Writing

I actually didn't like the heroine very much. She's a little too ditzy and a little too accepting of all of the hero's "commands". I thought there would be more of a slow build-up and a little more romance before they started on the "de-virgining." ;)

This wasn't my cup of tea, but the writing was good, so it might appeal to others.

John Maxwell's "The Complete 101 Collection" - Review

This "book" contains 8 books from John Maxwell's "101 Series" — "Attitude 101", "Self-Improvement 101", "Leadership 101", "Relationships 101", "Success 101", "Teamwork 101", "Equipping 101", and "Mentoring 101". A ninth book, "Ethics 101", is not included in this collection. This is a great starter set for a young leader and for an experienced leader who wants content for conversations in a mentoring relationship.

Each of these books is intended as an introduction to its topic. Don't expect to learn everything you need to know as a leader, despite the subtitle, "What Every Leader Needs to Know". However, do expect to get a good introduction to the things that a good leader needs to know and do. There are numerous references to other books by Maxwell, each of which goes into greater depth on a given topic. In typical Maxwell fashion, these books have plenty of quotes from historical figures as well as some of the best current writers on leadership. There is some overlap between the subject matters of the books, so there are sections that are repeated in different ones of these books. For example, a significant minority portion of "Mentoring 101" is included in "Equipping 101". That's not bad because equipping leaders and mentoring leaders have similar characteristics.

I think one of the best uses of these books (or this collection) would be for an experienced leader to mentor a young leader. And, in fact, 5 of these books (Mentoring 101, Relationships 101, Equipping 101, Attitude 101, and Leadership 101) are available as a part of Maxwell's Lunch & Learn series which includes a discussion guide.

Some of the themes that run throughout all of these books are:
• Trust
• Loyalty
• Choosing people based on leadership potential, not followship
• Passing on responsibility.

While every one of these books is helpful, I thought the best sections were:
• Leadership 101, Chapter 9, "How Can I Extend My Influence"
• Teamwork 101, Chapter 2, "What is the Impact of Good Teamwork", especially the section "Great Teams Create Community".
• Equipping 101, Chapter 5, "What Does It Take to Equip a Leader", especially the section "Check on Them Systematically" when Maxwell talks about working with "a person whose progress is repeatedly poor."

Reading the 101 Collection is time well spent

John C. Maxwell and his team cherry-picked the essentials in subjects such as leadership, attitude, relationships, teamwork, and mentoring and put them in an easy to read format. The 101 series helped more than one million readers to become better leaders. Now, all 6 titles have been combined into The Complete 101 Collection. A solid 8-10 hours reading can't make a leader out of anyone.
Attitude 101 deals with the formation and impact of attitude. Failure, success and the differences between attitude and character. Admit wrongdoings and forgiveness are important. Having the right attitude to lead, serve and enable growth is core to leadership. Each of us is created uniquely and performs differently, and should be treated as such.
Self-improvement 101 continues building your own leadership traits, before Leadership 101 concentrates on the ones to lead. You can lead, learn how to. Relationships 101 deals with the importance of relationships in every leadership setting. Success 101 focuses on the different perspectives on success and the generic principles to gain success and learn from failures. This book is well done because it is very detailed in its explanations. The way it is written is like a "stream of consciousness" explanation of what happens in the mind. As you read the book, you can identify what it talks about in your own mental experiences... which is the process by which one can build "awareness." being able to identify things is awareness. this books helps with this a lot!!

A little Hard to Read, yet Incredibly Useful

While Dr. Hall might not be the best writer, the sheer brilliance of his ideas shine through. Although I found the book a bit repetive at times, I learned so much that it was easily worth it. While not useful as an Introduction to NLP (for that, see Joseph O'Connors Introducing Neuro-Linguistic Programming), this book provides a fabulous framework for understanding the mind: Dr. Hall's Meta-State model is both practical and powerful, and does a fabulous job of integrating all the disparate threads that make up NLP. On a more personal level, since I have not yet masterd the ability to accurately visualize, I found Dr. Hall's emphasis on language particularly useful. If you are looking for a primer on NLP, look elsewhere -but if you want to deepen your understanding of NLP, you won't go wrong with Dragon Slaying by Dr. Michael Hall.

The depth and breadth of Hall's material is staggering. He's pulled together concepts from a variety of sources and successfully integrated it into his meta-states concept. As said by another reviewer this is not a introductory NLP book; it is however, considered an introductory meta-states book. Unfortunately, most of Hall's works are not user-friendly and this is no exception. It's poorly organized, formatted and editted; it can be difficult to read at times. DESPITE all this, the uniqueness and power of this book's concepts is well worth the trouble.

It is an interesting book. Relatively easy to read. Well organized. It would be nice to have more examples. Lists are good but they need to be substantiated. I also found the appendices to be nearly useless. There are many many pages of appendices and they really do not serve any purpose. It would be better just to delete those pages and give us a cheaper price. I bet we paid a lot for those appendices. So yes the price is high. I would liked to have seen many more diagrams. The ones present are helpful. The book needs editing in some sections. Overall, I give it a 3.5.
