Read with 3rd graders

My 3rd graders chose this book as a class. I was a little wary about reading it, but after we started they begged and begged me to keep reading to them. We were over half way finished within a few days. These books are perfectly adapted for elementary school students. It is very interesting, and the students were really engaged with this. I highly recommend it :)

Intriguing

The book is well written and the story, a classic, does nab attention. I had to read it to my younger daughter (as it is not an easy read). She was wrapped in the mystery of the twist and turns of the story.

A Landmark Drama

Written in the late 1970s and debuting on Broadway in 1980, CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD began as Mark Medoff's response to actress Phyllis Frelich's comment that few plays portrayed deaf and hearing-impaired people in a realistic manner. The resulting play shattered stereotypes and, in a very real sense, changed the way that society in general regarded people with hearing disabilities.

The story centers on the relationship between hearing James Leeds and deaf Sarah Norman, the former a teacher, the later a defiant woman who declines to communicate in any way other than sign language. Initial hostility turns into an affair; the affair turns into a marriage--but in the wake of the marriage the couple is repeatedly torn between the deaf and hearing worlds and Sarah's sudden determination that no one shall speak for her but herself.

CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD, which won an arm-load of Tony Awards, was among the very few non-musical plays that toured extensively in the 1980s. I myself had the opportunity to see one such tour and was startled when a group seated near me walked out on the show. "I thought this was going to be a play about those dear little deaf children!" a woman in the group loudly complained. No, it isn't, and after seeing or reading it you will find it difficult to think about people with hearing disabilities--or any other disability for that matter--in quite the same way. It is powerful stuff.

Many non-theatre people find playscripts difficult to read, and in truth playscripts are a blueprint for directors and actors and not intended as reading material for the general public. This is preface to the very basic statement that some plays "read" well and some do not. I must note that many readers may find it difficult to imagine how it is staged and how the sign language and various translation modes work on stage. It will be a bit of a challenge to some, but even so I strongly recommend it.

Could be life changing

I'm always cautious about Christian Motivational books. If you're not careful you'll find yourself reading Joel Olsteen-ish fluff.
But John Mason has given us a real, Christian based and Motivational book.
Using many quotes, lots of scripture and a bunch of wisdom, Mason gives us a lot to chew on. Sometimes almost TOO much to chew on.
Each chapter is only 2 or 3 pages, usually, so you can read a chapter a day. That's how I would recommend this book, too, because if you read too much, at least in my case, you can get into motivational overload and crash. But if taken in small bites, this book could change your life and/or career.

That is just a very small sample of one of the many inspirational quotes in this book. Depending on your mindset in life, this book can be anywhere from inspirational to life changing. Amazing book.

How did this ever get published?

An absolutely terrible series book and certainly not appropriate for a pre-teen. Our daughter is getting into Greek mythology and was planning on being Aphrodite for Halloween. We thought this would be a great segue for her to understand the (historical/ mythical) character in a fiction setting. Instead, it's absolute trite, about a bunch of catty girls drooling over guys with abs (!) and talking about hair styles. WTH? What has this got to do with Greek Mythology? Why even use the premise?. Call it something else all together. This is like a movie reboot that simply uses the title of the original to sell movie tickets, yet has zero to do with the original's story line or concept. You get the picture!

Piece of garbage.
I bought these books hoping my daughter would build up on her knowledge of Greek mythology and get to admire the power of godesses in different cultures of the world.
Turns out these books are just another My Little Pony or Mean Girls type of series set in a fake version of Greece that looks a lot like Miami or LA where the "godess" girls mainly do the following -
- go to malls. Yes, some make believe malls in Olympia
- go shopping to buy dresses and make up,
- talk about how to look pretty
- have crushes on godboys
- crave for the attention of godboys
- gossip, mainly about godboys
- have parties
- debate about whether all maidens should get married or not
- do a whole lot of really ridiculous sorority sister stuff.

This is not what I had in mind when I bought these books.
It seems like the authors are attempting to teach mythology in a really really dumbed down way.
What could have been an opportunity to create great characters and inspiring stories has been completely wasted.
The godess girls are worse than the Disney princesses. Stay away from them!
Read "The Princess in Black" instead

Goddess Girls Set w/charm bracelet is a real winner

I bought this set for my third grader granddaughter and she loved it so much that I bought additional titles in the series, too. The only way this series might be better - is to include how to pronounce the names of the Greek gods and goddesses. We do the best we can on that front but the stories themselves need NO improvement. I'm sure I'll be buying additional titles as they are released in the future. By the time she gets to a higher school grade, she'll know plenty about these Greek myth characters - a real plus.

She loved the charm bracelet, too !

About the Author

Dru Lavigne has been using the Berkeley Software Distribution family of operating systems since the mid-1990s, and PC-BSD has been her primary desktop since 2006. A network and systems administrator and information technology instructor, she has over a decade of experience administering and teaching Netware, Microsoft, Cisco, Checkpoint, SCO, Solaris, Linux, and BSD systems. A prolific author, she is the author of BSD Hacks (O'Reilly, 2004) and The Best of FreeBSD Basics (Reed Media Services, 2007).

Dru is currently the editor-in-chief of the Open Source Business Resource, a free monthly publication covering open source and the commercialization of open source assets. She is founder and current chair of the BSD Certification Group, a non-profit organization with a mission to create the standard for certifying BSD system administrators. Perfect book for a novice.

This is a good book for anyone who is just starting out with PC-BSD. I can't say that it has much in the way of advanced topics, however, it does cover the basics and where to go when you want to take the PC-BSD OS to the next level. I especialy like the section on how to install Free BSD software in PC-BSD, that right there is worth the cover price.

Useful, broad information to install and use PC-PSD

Upgrade: after playing with, enhancing and expanding my new PC-BSD 9.0 system and delving repeatedly back into the Guide to PC-BSD, I have to admit it is more definitive than I initially claimed, it is in fact more helpful than many of my user level Linux references. I recommend this reference.

PC-BSD is a nice alternative to Linux, offering many of the same features and applications, and adheres to the same philosophy of Open Software (free). But it seems not as well established as Linux nor offers the the variety of distributions as the many mainstream Linux distros. Nonetheless, it's a rock-solid system, and the basis for some very useful offshoots in network and security applications.

Consequently, user level documentation is not as widespread or diverse. This text will get you up and running, and serve as a desktop reference, for PC-BSD, a graphical (GUI) desktop system. This book describes the KDE desktop manager (PC-BSD supports Gnome and others, not described), and describes BSD equivalents for package management, mail clients, browsers, and all those applications familiar in MS Windows and Linux. This text is not intended to document the more technical aspects such as BSD programming, server installations, kernel development and the like (even though the distribution install disk offers many of these capabilities).

This text is nicely written and presented in the usual manner (overview, install, customizing,..., tuning), providing a general and useful description of what you need to make PC-BSD run and make you happy. I did not find it to be definitive. I did find it to be on the pricey side for what it offers, as I find most of the other BSD references to be; I have no clue why, maybe I shop the wrong sites.

My PC-BSD distribution DVD (from OSDisc dot Com, recommended) came with the PC-BSD User Handbook, in PDF format. I found this to be as useful as the Definitive Guide, so you might want to give the Handbook a try first (247 pages). However, if you are an entry level user, or have no Linux background, the Definitive Guide is the way to go. There doesn't seem to be much else out there to choose from, so enjoy what there is.

(fwiw: my PC-BSD system runs Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, built-in firewall and virus software, and a host of Linux applications; I am presently happy with this system, its performance, and security features. Either this Definitive Guide or the Handbook will take you there.)

I'm still reading this book, but what I've read so far I like. Dru has made it easy to follow and understand. If anyone is interested in BSD Operating systems, they might try the PC-BSD, Free-BSD, or similar Operating System. Try this book on for size. I know the more I read the more I like. There's so much the PC-BSD will do, that in itself is enough to go for it. You might go online and download PC-BSD Operating System, commit it to disk, and have it for when you get the book: The Difinitive Guide to PC-BSD. Thanks.
