About the Author
Brian Wildsmith was raised in a small mining village in England, where, he says, Everything was gray. There wasn't any color. It was all up to my imagination … Since then Wildsmith has created over 200 picture books, which have been translated into more than twenty languages. He was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal, Britain's highest honor for his ABC. Wildsmith is deservedly considered one of the greatest living children's book illustrators. In 1994 the Brian Wildsmith Art Museum was established in Izukogen, Japan.

Less than the best

I bought two copies of Brian Wildsmith's The Bremen Town Musicians for my granddaughters. I love Wildsmith's books, but this is the first time I've been disappointed by one. The Bremen Town Musicians was advertised as a new book on Amazon, but it is a reprint. That's one problem, but in my mind a minor one. The major problem is the quality of the reproduction. I don't know why they are this way, but the lines look blurry and the colors, normally bright and clean in a Wildsmith book, are often murky. Not very pleased with this purchase.

humorous story with luscious, eye-catching pictures

If you were a donkey which had grown old, couldn't work any more, was being sold, and decided to run away, where would you go and what would you do? The particular donkey in this story still has a fine braying voice, so he sets off for the famous city of Bremen to sing with the town band. Along the way, he meets a dog, a cat, and a rooster who are in the same situation as he, so he invites them along. They can hee-haw, howl, meow, and crow together in the band. But when they need a place to spend the night and something to eat, what will they do? And will they ever make it to Bremen?
This well-known Brothers Grimm fairy tale is here retold and illustrated by Brian Wildsmith, who was raised in a small mining village in northern England where, he says, "Everything was gray. There wasn't any color. It was all up to my imagination. I had to draw in my head." Since then, he has illustrated more than 200 picture books, many of which he wrote himself. In 1962 his ABC was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal, Britain's equivalent to the Caldecott Medal, and in 1971 The Owl and the Woodpecker was a runner up. The Brian Wildsmith Museum was established in 1994 at Izukogen, south of Tokyo, Japan. The Bremen Town Musicians is a book in which children will love both the humorous story and the luscious, eye-catching pictures.

A Real Treasure EVERY child must have.

I should have known that this would be a wonderful book, given it's illustrated by Brian Wildsmith! Anyway, I was Thrilled when I opened the package...as were my kids when they saw, as well, The drawings are so poignant! One can point out the signs of being older on the creatures. So much to talk about, as well as a delightful story no child should grow up without knowing. It has been 70 plus years since I mety the story, and It still brings me joy. Beautiful rendition!

Like all of the Eleanor H. Porter books I have read so far, this book about a girl who is mistaken for a boy is funny, entertaining, and will keep you reading to the very end. I highly recommend that you read this book!!

I'm just sorry that this series is ending and will not be continued. They have been delightful reading. It's a pleasure reading a well written story that comes to a happy conclusion. I've enjoyed the whole series.

Yoga for the Material Girl and Material for the Spirit

I love Lucy’s first book, Yoga School Dropout, and recommend it to all my Foundation course students (on account of her humourous and accurate summary of the main schools of Yoga on offer in India). Down Dog Billionaire is a slightly different beast and just as compulsively readable – though it may help if you are female. This attractively-packaged book is pure chick-lit with Yoga and the book is no less engaging than the cover.

The book works on several levels. On the surface, it’s `You’ve Got Mail’ for Generation Yoga – with competing yoga studios in place of bookshops. Lucy (like the great travel writer Eric Newby) used to work in advertising and multiple meanings fall thick and fast. There is no time for eating chocolate (even if it’s organic and sugar-free) as one follows the threads of ideas that all Yoga teachers will have entertained to a starry parade of conclusions. There is a generous learning-curve at play: Lucy is trying to sell nothing but the fact that health is wealth.

She follows through, too. As she explains at the back of the book, the publication of Yoga School Dropout brought a flood of requests for recommendations for good yoga classes. In response to this, Lucy has set up YogaClicks, with its 'site-within-a-site' YogaMeds: for students and teachers of Yoga and Yoga Therapy respectively. The latter comes complete with all the up-to-date research and evidence of why and how certain Yoga practices work for different conditions. Teachers can register, students can find the appropriate teacher. Brilliant.

What characterizes Lucy’s writing – and what sets her apart from other creators of chick-lit - is her deft sense of humour, her forgiveness of human foibles, the sheer joy with which she scoops up our Kleshas, uploads them into a divine channel of a narrative and transcends all our base expectations. Truly worth reading.
