About the Author
Professors Lila J. Truett and Dale B. Truett teach managerial economics and a number of other economics courses at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Lila Truett (Ph.D., University of Iowa) served an unusually long tenure as Director of the Division of Economics and Finance at UTSA and has also served on the Governing Board of the Southern Economic Association. Dale Truett received his Ph.D. form the University of Texas at Austin and has served as an academic administrator both at UTSA and at Florida International University, where he was founding chairman of the Department of Economics. From 1997 - 2002 he held an Ashbel Smith Professorship, the highest distinction for schlorship and research at UTSA. The Truetts have a great deal of consulting experience, including work with a number of Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 firms.

Informative!

This book is really not as bad as people make it out to be. Its not amazing, but it doesn't deserve all the terrible feedback either. It includes important concepts such as profit maximization, economic forecasting and many more important topics that a business person should be familiar with. At first it was hard for me to understand the book, but its one of those things that comes to you as you read more and more and voilà all of a sudden you feel enlightened. At my University we are doing the calculus part of the problems not the stats, but I imagine stat problems are just as good. If you do not know calculus I highly recommend studying it before you look at this book.

Worst Economics Book Ever...

I personally had the honor to take Professor Dale Truett's class in managerial economics. Although Dr. Truett knows far more than the average scholar of economics, it is best he sticks to the real thing, rather than trying to write a book about it. It is one of the hardest texts I have ever had to read...

A Bad Textbook

I am currently taking a MBA class and this text book is being used. In just a few weeks I find this worst textbook I have ever used. The explanations to concepts are unclear. There are very few examples utilizing the concepts. Many of the answers to problems are incorrect to the point our teacher list the errors when assigning the homework. The study guide is of no help since it does not even explain how to do the problems. There has to be some other text out there that is better than this one.

The Pursuit of Our Humanity

I am just now ordering this, but I already know it's great because it's from the pieces Maira did for the New York Times. They are wonderful, almost stream-of-consciousness illustrations with words that always touched my intellect and my humanity. The themes are mostly from U.S. history, and they always sneak up on your mind and emotions in unexpected ways. I frequently posted a comment at the Times after reading one of these, thanking her in one way or another for what she did. You cannot go wrong ordering this book. In these cynical times, it's good to have intelligent observations that move us in a positive and non-manipulative way. Thank goodness for talented folks like Maira Kalman.

A breath of fresh air!

At a time when everyone around me seems to hate how the United States has become the Not "it" country. I found the book that restores my love for it.
Being a student that wants to change this country for the better, this book shows me what it was before this mess came around. This book has humor,art history all mixed with a feeling of warmness. Great thanks to the Colbert Report for introducing me to this amazing artist and writer.

Should Be Required Studying in All U. S. History Classes

Tears formed when I finished reading page 105 because as a youth I sat in those boring town meetings up in Derby, Vermont, wishing I hadn't been told by my father that I must attend, that it was my civic duty to learn about how democracy really works. Now, today, when it seems that my vote really doesn't amount to anything, I appreciate so much that, indeed, buying a new backhoe for the town might require some discussion before the ayes have it whereas there is no need to discuss the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant. Indeed the ayes have it for that and for this amazing book.
Then on pages 106-107 is yet another remarkable Maira Kalman illustration, this one of that New England town meeting as people gather to eat: "We eat macaroni cheese. Corn bread. Coffee cake. Brownies. The works. Sitting together. Democrats and Republicans. Atheists and believers. Can this system work? I am filled with options..."
Oh, if only I could be as hopeful as this author-illustrator is. But for the moments I am in the book, I am indeed brought back to the possibilities that exist for this country if only...
And you, like me, will find moments when you laugh such as this family law: "Do good deeds for strangers, but beware of relatives."
We get to meet Ruth Bader Ginsburg (fortunately not Thomas, Scalia, Roberts, Alito). The sitting portrait of her says it all for me. We need more women--intelligent ones, please!--in all layers of government. She went to law school to fight off forces of injustice, i.e., McCarthyism.
Ah, and then my favorite first lady. Eleanor! There she is, Mrs. Roosevelt on page 143. And I ask why we have yet to elect an intelligent, humane woman president.
Every aspect of history is covered but not chronologically although the book is divided into the twelve months. May is "At Ease," war.
I cannot do justice to this book because it is so unique, so fresh, so lovely. The story is wonderful, a first person account. And, oh, my, the amazing illustrations and photographs.
This should be required reading/studying in all U. S. history classes.

No wonder I graduated summa cum laude

Hadn't read a Nancy Drew book in 40 years but now have a 7-year-old... We read the second in the series (Hidden Staircase) aloud together. Then I downloaded this book (The Secret of the Old Clock) onto my Kindle and stayed up past my bedtime to finish it. Next day I decided my daughter needed a Kindle of her own. Two days later, I loaded her new Kindle with a dozen good books for age 8-12. Guess which she picked to read first? She is reading like in a trance this morning--while walking here and there and eating breakfast.

My perspective has changed since I read these books as a child--often aloud to my little sister. Wow, what terrific books! The vocabulary is rich. The sentence structures are engaging. Then consider the content. The heroine, Nancy Drew, is smart and brave. She interacts with people in appropriate ways. She actually has leadership qualities. The plots are exciting in a who-done-it fast-paced way, even though at times improbable. This is exactly one of the types of books I want my daughter to read.

This book would be great as a read-aloud to most 7 and 8-year-olds. The reading level is probably best for most slightly older children (9-12?). My daughter recently tested at sixth grade level in reading and Nancy Drew is challenging for her, especially the vocabulary. Nancy is good competition for video games. Enjoy the book(s)!

New to Nancy Drew

This book arrived in the mail today. I am very pleased with the packaging and of the way the book looks. As a hard copy, the pages are worn but sufficiently good enough for a new reader to handle. Our 2nd grader is an avid reader at 3d or 4th grade reading of library books. I felt she was ready for the Nancy Drew series. Once she sets her mind to reading, we have to lure her away from the book to do something else -- but she always goes back into the story. For this we are terribly grateful. Because if it's not there, you cannot force a child to read. I recommend all such books to any child who shows an interest in reading because I remember myself and I loved being a part of the story from the outside looking in.

I'm teaching a course on women mystery writers and wanted the original 1930s Nancy Drew. This is a revised Nancy Drew from the 50s or 60s. She's been toned down and washed out. Bah humbug.

About the Author
John McClellan is one of America's most respected guitarists and is the Head of Classical Guitar Studies at Webster University in Saint Louis, Missouri. He has toured throughout Europe, South America, and Australia and has performed with diverse groups of musicians ranging from Tommy Emmanuel to Lucianno Pavarotti. He along with his duo partner, Kirk Hanser (The Hanser-McClellan Guitar Duo) organized the highly successful Guitar Foundation of America International Festival in 1996.

Chet Atkins books 95% there

Volume 2 and its predecessor are obviously labors of love on the parts of the authors and contributors. The reminiscences and anecdotal stuff are fun. If you couldn't tell it from his music, Chet was probably the most wholesome and genuinely niceguy to ever work in the music biz. We get really interesting glimpses into the Nashville scene of the Chet era.

But the transcriptions are what it's all about, and again, the authors have really put in the time and effort to get them right. I definitely recommend that all Chet aspirants should pick up these two volumes. So why only 4 stars? I don't think it would've killed 'em to include chord symbols above the staff. Sure, it's good training to analyze the harmonies on one's own, but for at-a-glance understanding of Chet's arranging approach, chord substitutions, quickly grasping the left-hand chord shapes, and getting a sense of the overall A-B-C structure of the song, it would have been a big help. Maybe in the next edition....

Much better than Vol. 1

Although this book is similar to Vol. 1, in that it contains a lot of pictures and history text, there is a better selection of some of Chet"s more popular instrumentals. There are some chord notations in a few of the tabs, but still no chord diagrams. There are no performance notes concerning some of Chet"s unique fingering techniques. So it is not a teaching book and like Vol. 1 not for the beginner.

I loved the book. The reading was interesting & informative. The pictures were interesting & enjoyable. If the music had had chord symbols I'd have given it 5 stars. Many of us don't have the knowledge or ability to figure out the chords just by looking at the music.

About the Author
Karl Jenkins is a Welsh composer and musician, famed for such contemporary classics as Adiemus, The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, Palladio, and Benedictus. He holds a Doctor of Music degree from the University of Wales, has been made both a Fellow and an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, where a room has been named in his honor, and has fellowships at Cardiff University, Swansea University, The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Trinity College Carmarthen, and Swansea Metropolitan University. He was awarded the OBE in 2005 the CBE in 2010, for "services to music." Sam Jackson is the Managing Editor of Classic FM, responsible for all of the station’s on-air programming, a role he has held since 2011. He sits on the governing body of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and on the University of York Music Department’s advisory board. In addition, Sam is the author of two Sunday Times bestselling books about classical music.

Well written book which I enjoyed. The atmosphere could be described as 'cozy' and as such this book was very welcome during the cold winter in Norway. If you seek a book with juicy stories over and opinions about his fellow composers in England, seek elsewhere. Jenkins is too much of a gentleman to be that outspoken in 'public'. Nevertheless it was a nice read and I would recommend this book to anyone who knows Jenkins' music.
