Hank Runs a Bluff (From Hank the Cowdog #1: The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog) Hank has been accused of murder! In a fit of despair, Hank resigns his position as Head of Ranch Security and decides to join the outlaw coyotes on the open range. There he's known as Hunk (that's Hank in coyote language). Hank meets Missy Coyote, sister to Scraunch -- the meanest, roughest, toughest, most notorious coyote in the whole country. If Scraunch found Hank with his sister... well, look out for trouble.

"How can a nice girl like you have such a bad brother?" said Hank.

Missy shook her head. "Hunk be careful. Not safe here."

"I ain't scared. Hank ready to fight whole family for Missy."

"Hunk in trouble. Whole family here."

I looked around. She wasn't kidding. The whole danged family had arrived. We was surrounded by lean-limbed, long-haired, scruffy-tailed, yellow-eyed, hungry-looking coyotes.

One of the first rules you learn in security work is never bite if you can bark; never bark if you can growl; never growl if you can talk; never talk if you can run.

In other words, when the odds are against you, the best kind of fight is none at all. That was my strategy, see. The longer I talked, the longer I could stay alive. And who knows, I just might say something that would change Scraunch's mind about tearing me limb from limb.

A hush had fallen over the tribe and all eyes were on the two of us. He sat down and leered at me.

I leered right back, tried to anyway, though I'd never really perfected a good leer.

"All right," I nodded, "you asked for it, you've really done it this time. Come on! Get off your duff and let's settle this thing once and for all. I'm tired of waiting. I mean, I came out here to get you, Scraunch. Oh, I know you thought I was messing around with your sister. Ha! That's just what I wanted you to think. It was a trap, Scraunch, and you walked right into it.

Missy glanced at me, and I gave her a smile and a wink.

Scraunch cut his eyes toward old Gut.

"Scraunch kill chicken dog."

I marched right up to him until there weren't more than a couple of inches between our noses.

"If you're determined to go through with this, let's get it on. But first, I want you to ask yourself this question: Why would a smart dog walk right into the middle of a bunch of coyotes? If you figger it out, you'll know the secret."

Nobody moved. There wasn't a sound, not a whisper. I was in the process of checking out the escape routes when an old woman coyote (Scraunch's mother) broke the circle and came out to him. She whispered something in his ear.

"No!" he growled. "Scraunch not scared, kill chicken dog!"

The old lady went to whispering again, then old Chief Gut limped over and joined the conference. They growled and snapped and snarled -- typical coyote family discussion, I would imagine.

"All right," I yelled, "time's up. Have you figgered out the secret or shall we start spilling blood?"

The old lady led Scraunch away. He glared daggers at me over his shoulder. Old Chief Gut came over and stood in front of me.

"Not fight today."

"Rats," I said, and almost fainted with relief. "All right, if that's the way you want it. We'll let it slide this time but I'm warning you, don't ever let this happen again."

"Not happen again."

"Very good. Now, if you coyotes will just stay where you are, I'll slip out of here and get on my way."

"Hunk not understand."

Missy came over.

"Hunk stay, become coyote warrior, prove himself many fight and marry Missy Coyote."

"HUH?"

"Make warrior? Well, I...I've always wanted...but I really have to..."

I tried to ease around the three coyotes who were blocking my path. When I moved, they moved. They didn't intend to let me out of there, is the way it looked.

Quality reference

I bought a copy of this classic textbook after checking it out of the library. As a practicing engineer, I had an undergraduate course in probability, with virtually no statistics (there is a difference). This title, while providing an excellent but cursory treatment on probability, is generous with statistical theory. Many statistics books for engineers are "cookbook" in nature: here's a problem or hypothesis, here's the relevant test statistic, here's its tabulated distribution, here's an example. While these kinds of texts are excellent for bootstrapping self study and practical problem solving, this title provides more. I have continually found it to be a powerful reference by elucidating details that I have not picked elsewhere in self study, thus filling in many gaps in my knowledge of statistics. The theoretical expositions have allowed me to write my own programs to calculate P-values for hypothesis testing for some fairly specialized tests (freeing me from the dependence upon tables).
It's scope is fairly broad, crammed with many basic statistical tests that I have found scattered among many other books. It was designed for a 3 semester course and assumes the reader has knowledge of differential calculus. The title is a reprint of a 1965 2nd edition. Surprisingly for its age, it has chapters on nonparameteric testing, as well as tests of randomness, and I have not found its age to be particularly detrimental. At 600 pages, the reader is sometimes left wanting just a little bit more information. The references cited at the ends of each chapter have been gold mines of additional information (but one needs a library with access to pre-60's statistical journals.) There are student exercises with partial answers in the appendix.
I recommend this text as a fairly comprehensive, secondary reference to the practicing engineering or scientist who wants to not only apply statistical procedures to his research, but also to better understand them.

Rayno serves as the director of Raleigh-Area Concerts of Prayer, a regional ministry in North Carolina that brings together Christian pastors and laypeople for united prayer activities.

Top biography of top musician

Part 2 of Don Rayno's Whiteman bio/discography is as excellent as part 1. Whiteman could not have a better book and deserves this high quality. His importance in American music cannot be overestimated.

A Work of Love!

Great job by Mr. Rayno. This book is a very detailed biography, chronology, list of Pops' musicians and singers and a very good discography of Pops' commercial recordings. The only problem I have is that the discography does not include broadcast recordings. I have grown to expect these in a discography. Since Pops and his orchestra had several sponsored radio and television shows from 1930-1967 the discography would probably have been as long as the whole book! I will have to dig around for this information. Of course, a discography of broadcast recordings would only include those that were preserved and are extant in some type of media somewheres on planet earth. Not everything that Pops performed on the air.

First cookbook I have ever bought!

I have never really cooked before but I spotted Donal on This Morning on ITV a few weeks ago and wanted give the cookbook a try... The book really doesn't disappoint with loads of favourites which I just never had the recipe for and then lots of stuff I had never tried before like lamb shanks and spatchcock chicken... I've basically been cooking my way through the book and loving every second of it- I would highly recommend the book and hope that you enjoy it as much as I have!

So needed!!!

The message of this book is very much needed in our day and age. The risks we equate with confronting many in our lives often causes us to stay quiet when we should not. There are moments when it is better to stay silent, to mind our own business. However, we have arrived at a point where our lack of communication is, at times, to the detriment of the one who should receive our words. The church, in particular, has taken a mediocre approach to the confrontation of sin in the lives of its congregation. While we gaze wildly at the public outside her doors, ridiculing, finger pointing and condemning the sin seen, we have turned a soft hand of discipline on those within the church body. Rather than confront, we stay silent. Our silence inadvertently condones the sin. Dr Jeff Parker shows when confrontation should happen, how to confront and discusses living a life that not only glorifies God, but also helps in leading others to a life that is blameless, ultimately allowing them to live fully & abundantly. We must learn to confront in Christlike ways to enable the church in looking as she should. To look different from the world.

A very helpful look at something missing in churches

In the context of today's American church society, I think this book is highly relevant and provides some very good and practical insights as to the issue of confronting sin. The argument of this book is that the lax attitude toward sin is one of the direct causes to the rampant immorality of our country; this cavalier view of sin is evidence of a lack of discipline, and one of the most powerful tools of discipline between believers is confrontation.

At some points, I found the language to be very repetitive, but the message was clear. One of the most helpful features of this book is the end of chapter section "Helping the Laity," although this section isn't included in every chapter (when the context necessitates).

Great Book

This book has helped me evaluate my actions and thoughts. I by nature am not very confrontational. I am seeing that there should be value in confrontation if done correctly, for the right purpose. If someone is running toward a cliff. I should be very confrontational. The truth revealed to be in this book, is that many people are headed toward cliffs of all kinds, and I need to be willing to step up and make sure they know they are running toward the cliff, and maybe even jump in front of them and scream stop. Oh! and one more thing. I need to be confronted, and I need to accept the confrontation as a good thing. I don't have to do what the confronter says, but I definitely need to evaluate my actions. This is a great book.

In 1988, he sold Motown to MCA for $61 million. He begins with his childhood in Detroit and his forays into music as owner of a jazz-record store and successful songwriter for singer Jackie Wilson. A substantive, reasonably candid memoir from the founder of Detroit's legendary Motown Records, creator of the soundtrack of the '60s. Gordy opens in 1988, as he agonizes over the sale of his independent company to conglomerate giant MCA, but quickly flashes back to the period everyone wants to read about: Motown's Golden Age, 19601970, when Gordy and his crack team of songwriters, producers, and studio musicians (many of them affectionately portrayed here) created a series of brilliant pop records--from ``My Girl'' to ``Where Did Our Love Go'' to ``I Heard It Through the Grapevine''--that made artists like the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, and the Jackson Five famous. Along the way, Motown's success completed the destruction of musical segregation that had begun with the rock and soul explosion of the early 1950s. `` `Pop' means popular,'' writes Gordy on the subject of categorizing art. ``I never gave a damn what else it was called.'' His solidly middle-class, high-achieving parents were remarkably patient with his long search for a career (he was 29 when he started Motown in 1959 with an $800 loan from the family credit union), and he warmly depicts them and his siblings, many of whom came to work at Motown. A fair amount of time is also devoted to his active love life; he had eight children with five different women, including one with Diana Ross, the supreme Supreme he calls ``my star...my leading lady.'' Knowledgeable music fans will spot some selective recall on Gordy's part--he glosses over widespread resentment of Ross in particular--but for the most part he is frank about tensions within Motown and convincing in his rebuttal of charges that the company exploited its artists financially. His descriptions of the famous ``assembly-line'' process by which Motown crafted hits the way Detroit's auto companies cranked out cars shows the producers/songwriters as the primary artistic force behind the music. nothing that we really didn't already know

Berry Gordy's book has some interesting moments, but is basically more spin than anything else. He never mentions certain situations that occurred that are pretty much known by the public and had a huge impact (good and bad) on the careers of several Motown artists. Unfortunately, this book has the same feel as Diana Ross' "Secrets of a Sparrow", which was also more fluff PR than anything else. Maybe this generation believes it's best to leave certain things unsaid and if that's the case, don't bother to write a book.

Incredible story and beautifully written. Berry is a very interesting person with a terrific way to tell his story which is super funny, insightful and honest. A great, hard-to-put-down book which he wrote -- it's not a "written with the help of another author" publication. Well done Berry. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys great writing. You won't forget it.

Deceptive book title

I suspect this book was given its title to reel in buyers actually looking for the book "Guess How Much I Love You", which is the well-known origin of the line. The phrase isn't even used in the text of this book, though a similar one is. It's still a cute young children's book, there's nothing wrong with it otherwise, but I think the title is deceptive.

A disappointing book.

I bought this book because of the title, since it is a favorite saying of my grandchild's mother. I was disappointed that the phrase was not even used in the story. And the story was not very well written. All in all, I was sorry I had spent money on this book.

she will be so happy to have the book as a keepsake

I have been saying "Love you to the moon and back" to my daughter for years. She is almost 10 and loves that I still say it. I'm giving her the book as a stocking stuffier, she will be so happy to have the book as a keepsake, since she thinks it is something I only say.
