functioning words: "the ART of..." not "how-to"

I inherited this book from my father and enjoyed perusing it from time-to-time. I loved that book dearly, and so, decided to share it with others by donating it to our local library.

Another reviewer was correct that it is not a typical "how-to" book, but it is an inspirational art book of classic Japanese joinery. The reason there is little "how-to" information here is because there are so many ways to accomplish these joints; by machine, entirely by hand, or with jigs and many combinations thereof. Also, the only people interested in this type of work are those who simply find it fascinating or are expert craftsmen. In either case, extraneous "how-to" info is not needed.

The book is beautiful, unique, and about an arcane subject, so it has high merit solely in that respect. If you love this type of thing, it is for you and highly recommended. Gorgeous photographs of intricate, hand-crafted joinery are intriguing for some of us woodworkers, even if we never intend to use these joints. And for those of who have made some of these joints, the excellent examples provide a high benchmark for grading our own efforts.

Most of the joinery in this book was cut by hand with traditional Japanese hand tools: Dozuki saws, chisels and wooden planes. Part-time "Home" craftsmen may find these examples inspiring, intimidating or outright depressing in comparison to their own work. My father was a world-class craftsman ( a violin repairman and pattern-maker) so he made many of these joints just for practice, although the methods he chose would undoubtedly differ from traditional Japanese woodworker's ways.

The few joints in here that I found practical use for were the construction joints that help isolate vibration while maintaining structural integrity. Although these timber-framing joints are intended to provide flexible-yet-strong houses in earthquake-prone Japan, they are also useful in building recording-studios where sound-transmission through joist-conduction must be minimized. I suspect that very few construction workers would have the confidence in their skills to cut some of these complex joints into an expensive 60-foot glue/ lam beam as I did. Of course, I would have never risked that without practicing the joints first on less expensive material with the expert help of my father. If you build recording studios, or want an Earth friendly yet Earthquake resistant home, you may find practical applications for timber framing joinery within. Although I have not heard of many architects using this joinery, I have thought of other applications. The metal-free joinery ( without nails or screws) in this volume could solve some design problems in structures that contain super-powerful magnets for nuclear medicine or particle physics labs.

If you want a "gee-whiz! YOU TOO can create these fancy joints with simple techniques and cheap tools" type of book, look elsewhere. This is not a book for the Sears Table-saw crowd.

This is a magnificent tome for an elite group of artisans and art-lovers.

Fantastic pictures, but not a guide

This book is wonderful, if you think of the title as "Artful Pictures of Japanese Joinery" or perhaps "Japanese Joinery Art." Saying it the way that it is can be misleading, at least it was for me.

Pages 1-25 are a very cursory overview of the art of carpentry in ancient Japan. Pages 25-88 are full page, gorgeous pictures of different Japanese carpenter's joints. Pages 89-106 are a series of cutaway line drawings of joints, almost an attempt to show you how to do it, but more just to show the complexity of the joints themselves.

But nowhere are there clear, explicit instructions with proportions or techniques to create these joints. This wasn't clear from the description, which is actually quite misleading saying that "even the weekend carpenter can duplicate these bequests from the traditional Japanese carpenter" using this book. That is absolutely not the case, at least for this weekend carpenter.

Great pictures, fantastic art, but a poorly conceived and advertised book for the purpose of making this art. Try The Complete Japanese Joinery instead if you want to make these.

Great Book

If you want to learn about Japanese joinery this is an excellent choice. If you want to make Japanese joints, then I would say this should be an essential companion book to "The Complete Japanese Joinery" by Hideo Sato & Yasua Nakahara, which is a much more hands on how-to treaty.

There are some nice b/w photos of temple architecture in Nara & shimane, followed by 57 beautiful b/w photos of various complex joints all crafted with expert precision. The text describes the function, splicing, and connecting of joints.

Again this is not a technical manual per se, but if you are interested in the subject there is limited choices and I personally love this book.

Essential Reading

A stunning, heart-rending, highly-readable drama based on the tragic story of Procne and Philomela from Ovid's Metamorphoses. This version accentuates the friendship between the two sisters, the foolishness of their father, the king, who entrusts his daughters to Tereus, seeing him only as a "noble soldier," and ignoring that Tereus views women's bodies as the rightful spoils of war. This version also updates the ancient tale of rape and revenge with the testimony of recent victims of wartime rape (through the words of the Greek-style chorus of women). The tale is of course extremely violent and gruesome, without consolation, the only resolution coming in the final metamorphoses from agonized and brutalized human beings to sorrowful birds. Readers may well gasp and weep as they read. But I know of no other fictional account that better portrays the unredeemable pain of rape. "Biochemical Pathways..." - An excellent reference guide

The book "Biochemical Pathways..." is the book of choice if you quickly need information on a particular biochemical reaction, substrate or enzyme and serves well as an excellent reference guide. It is a comprehensive book version of the well-known Boehringer Mannheim wallchart "Biochemical Pathways" that can surely be found in almost every laboratory on the world. The book is color-coded and in addition to the enormous biochemical wallchart data gives a large body of overview information about fundamental aspects concerning enzyme structure, viruses and even the immune system.

"Bichemical Pathways"...Great content, Poor Presentation

Comprehensive references of bochemical pathways are not common, especially with well described cofactors, modulators, and interactions with disparate pathways. This book could provide such a useful reference, unfortunately, the quality of the layout is so poor as to make it very difficult to read. Poor graphic quality, exceptionally small fonts, and poor color choices render what should be a most useful reference into a visually challenging document. At the price, the book is a disappointment, although the content is great. One wishes that the editors would rerelease it after completely revising the graphics and production quality, as the content is indeed very useful.

Excerpt from Section I: Starting Out Right at a Law Firm

Two dogs are chasing a car and one says to the other, "What are you going to do if you catch it?"

That is exactly the way I felt at the beginning of my legal career. I had been chasing this dream of being a lawyer for so long, and when I had everything I needed—my college degree, my law degree, and my license to practice—I was a little uncertain about what would come next.

Despite the uncertainty you may be feeling, stay positive, pay attention to detail, and work hard. If you can do that, your transition from student to lawyer will be a smooth one.

1. Get the Details of Your Employment Agreement in Writing

When it comes to their own business affairs, attorneys are notorious for failing to get the terms of their agreements in writing. You would never tell a client to do business on a handshake, so why would you do it yourself? It is important to start your job off right by getting the terms of your employment in writing.

If you are a new attorney, getting the employment agreement you want is a four-part process:

1. Do some research and be prepared to negotiate your agreement. Get to know the Career Services Director at your law school. The director's job is to help both students and graduates find the job they want. He or she will have a wealth of knowledge about the range of salary and benefits you might expect given your education and experience and the size and location of the firm. If you are going straight into a partnership situation or are office-sharing with someone, you need very specific information from the firm itself about past profits and expenses so that you can determine how future profits and expenses will be shared.

2. Keep an open mind during negotiations. Don't be so set on a particular salary range that you overlook a firm that has amazing benefits or opportunities. That being said, if you work hard, you will be worth every penny the firm pays you, so do not be shy about fighting for the salary you believe you are worth.

3. Get the agreement in writing. If you fail to do this, you make it easier for your employer to avoid living up to his or her part of the deal.

4. Don't sign the agreement until you've had another lawyer look at it. Even if it's a friend or mentor and not someone you've actually hired, it's always a good idea to have a fresh set of eyes check it over.

2. Appearances Matter

When I say that appearances matter in your law practice, I am not suggesting that you need expensive suits and expensive cars. My dad says that a bad golfer with nice equipment is still a bad golfer. However, even though it is true that the finest suit will not make you a good lawyer, there is still a certain threshold of acceptable appearance that is expected of you.

Throughout your career, you will see attorneys who should immediately be reported to the Legal Fashion Police. The most extreme example is the attorney who went to visit her client at the detention facility wearing a tube top. That's right, the attorney was wearing a tube top. Even the facility expressed their disapproval of her clothing choice.

So put your tube top away and ask yourself these questions to determine whether or not your appearance is appropriate:

1. How do I look? When my clients look at me, will they have confidence in me as their attorney? Am I dressed modestly and tastefully? Are my clothes too tight or too loose? Are my teeth clean? Would a judge think I am dressed appropriately? No one will want to pay thousands of dollars in legal fees to someone who has body odor and bad breath. You are a professional. So look like one. If you have no idea how to do that, go to a clothing store or department store and a sales associate will be glad to help you put some outfits together.

2. How does my office look? Has my client's file been compiled in an orderly fashion? When my clients see my office, will they have confidence that I won't lose their documents? Do I have stacks of paper everywhere? Are there stale donuts and soda cans strewn everywhere? To a client in crisis, these are not good signs. If a client comes in unexpectedly and I have a full desk, my assistant and I have a designated spot where we stash the clutter. Avoid shoving it in your desk because you don't want documents to get lost or misplaced.

3. How does my assistant look? How does her work area look? Is he dressed neatly? Is he or she trying to make clients feel welcome and important? The appearance and attitude of your assistant is a direct reflection on you so pay attention.

While expensive clothes and furniture might make a certain first impression, competence and professionalism will make a lasting one.

great value for associates

I am a third year associate and just relocated to a different firm. I was in search of a book generally outlining some of the practical advice of practicing law. .. not all the law school substantive stuff. I really wanted to make sure I wasn't missing the good practice foundations from my first job.
While 90 percent of this book is common sense, the other 10 percent is solid insight into the daily practice of law. The chapters are short and the writing is very easy to read, even after a long day. This might not be the perfect book, but there is a substantial amount of value in the 10 percent. ..and the other 90 is a great refresher for the things you might forget.

Nothing Special

This book isn't bad, it just isn't great. The legal field stretches pretty widely, and experiences and advise varies dramatically depending on where in the field you are. I think the author tried to split the difference between them all, thus depending on your practice you will find a handful of gems and 10-30 tips of general advise you probably already know sprinkled with personal anecdote.

This is certainly not focused on succeeding in a larger firm environment.
