This book is a classic in the field

Pretty much the best book you'll find in the area of infrared system engineering. I just started learning about this field, and it gives a very clear and lucid introduction to this area. I was referred to this book by somebody who has been in the field for a long time and who still uses this book for reference. Though the technology is out-dated, the book is dominated by concepts and is relevant to those trying to understand the arcane field of IR.

Gold standard for the field

There's really nothing to say about this product. It is, and has been, the best book on the subject for forever.

My main concern is that it does spend a number of pages describing the use of slide rules for computation which are no longer produced. An updated version detailing a computer algorithm would be appreciated. It also seems a little lacking in the mathematical theory, devoting only one chapter to these details.

The fundamental difference between technology when the book was initially published and today is the revolution in computing technology, and the subsequent revolution in computer simulation and modeling. Accordingly, a future update should be revised to include more mathematical theory -- and more examples -- of use to software models.

But even with these weaknesses, IMO this is a "must-have" for anyone interested in this field.

The "classic" text, still relevant in 2014

I am a consultant and frequently need to get up to speed quickly on technical topics related to the projects I support. I asked a fellow optical systems designer what I should read to get smart on IR sensing systems and he simply said "the Hudson book." Well, this is that book; published in 1969, very little of it has become obsolete in that time. Yes, he talks about Radiation Calculator slide rules versus Matlab programs for numerically solving the equations of radiance, but the basic math is still the same. It's definitely the first book you'll reach for when you want a thorough introduction to all aspects of IR sensing systems. Just supplement it with some contemporary material on uncooled microbolometers and you're set.

Good book to add a regimin to ones existing wing chun study

K.T. Chao claims a to have been a student at the yip man school and a colleage with bruce lee. All of his books have a lot of routine. Perhaps a trademark of the yip man school. Lots of repetition.

Simple. Lots of pictures. Not a lot of hype. Good old fashioned modifyed wing chun.

A great training manual

I gave this book five stars because it provides a lot of examples on exercises you can do with a partner and alone that allow you to develop specific skills. You won't learn applications or strategies from this. You won't learn the techniques. The terminology used for the techniques is a bit awkward but if you know the techniques already, then the terms and the bad photos won 't be a problem. You'll know what the author is talking about. But, really, the exercises and drills are great and that's the reason to buy this book. Get other books, like those written by Shaun Rawcliffe and Wayne Belanoha to supplement your learning, as well. So, if you get this book and just do the exercises laid out by the author, then you'll really be getting your money's worth from the purchase. Again, this won't teach you applications or techniques. It won't teach you fighting strategy. But, it's got information you won't find in other sources, unless you go to a school with a real sifu who can have you do these same exercises.

Great addition in between classes

Nice in depth yet simple instructions and repitition drills fully illustrated but not lacking written description. Mine shipped from The UK so it may take awhile if you're in the U.S.A. There are tidbits of info, history and meaning thrown in, keeping this from being a boring peice of technical writing. I am using this for pointers in addition to what my instructor has taught me. If you cannot find a Wing Chun Sifu in your area this book is acceptable.
