This should be required reading for every adult

I wished i read this book 20 years ago. It could of made a huge difference in my life. It is written like a parable so there can be different interpretation. There are several different stories of men becoming successful in the ancient city of Babylon. Some of the stories required me to read it two or three times to truly understand what the message is. The book was written the 1920's so the language can be difficult to translate to modern english language. The common theme throughout the book is that YOU should be paid first before you pay anyone else. The author calls it FATTEN your Purse first.
My understanding is that we are all SLAVES when we are in debt to others. To many people live pay check to pay check just trying to keep their head above the water. Regardless of your situation make sure you pay yourself at least 10% of what you earn.
Here is the LAWS of building Wealth translated for 2016.
1. Pay yourself at least 10%
2. Control your spending
3. Make sound investments that grow interest
4. Have insurance to protect you from any loss
5. OWN your house
6. Prepare for retirement
7. Increase your professional skills so you can get paid more

Why did I put this off?

I've heard about this book for several years and have intended to get to it but I just kept slipping something else on front of the line. I finally got to it and now I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. I would compare the message to Rich Dad, Poor Dad as they both fall in the category, for most people I've heard from, of books that most significantly altered the financial course of their lives. And while I agree that Rich Dad also teaches a better way to think about your money, Ive never really enjoyed reading it. I've always felt the stories are too long and the conversations it relays are not very likely for a 9 year old and his boss. So, I struggled through to mine the nuggets (eventually, I took great notes so I would never reel like I needed to read through it again). But this is not a review for Rich Dad!
Richest Man in Babylon is much different. The stories which encapsulate the nuggets are actually very interesting and entertaining. Reading this financially impacting book is both quick and enjoyable. I didn't want to put it down as I was interested to see what truths I would learn but equally as interested in the outcome of our ancient friends from Babylon. I will say that some of the nuggets are repeated throughout the book in the form of different stories. It's as if the author had some really great points on how you need to think about and use your money to gain "gold" (or wealth) and came up with a few stories (and included them in the book) to relay these truths.
If I had understood, practiced and stuck to "Cure #1" "start thy purse to fattening" (which means to retain at least 10% of your esrnings) alone I would be much better off financially than currently. This is merely the beginning and may seem obvious and simple but the book reinforces this point well. And, this is merely the beginning. The power in this book comes from what you do after you follow Cure #1.
I will certainly be giving this book to my kids and will ask them to reread it often as they begin to forge their way financially. It should be mandatory reading in our schools. If you homeschool your kids - make it so!

This Should Be On School Reading Lists

I wish I had read this in elementary school! It's the only book I can ever remember actually buying on Kindle (I usually read free books). It's more than worth the $1.99 I paid, though later I did find it free online somewhere. But I'm not mad. This book is...life-changing. Truly, you'll never think of money the same way again. I knew this book was onto something when I read *spoiler!* that a tenth of all you make is yours to keep. It made me stop reading and think. I'm 22 so owning a home and retirement weren't exactly foremost in my mind before I read this book. Given that I come from a poor background (and a few generations of single mothers who struggled and a long generation of black people who worked their asses off to get what they have, which admittedly isn't much) this is a book that I wish my great-grandma (yea, she's still alive) and my grandma and my mother had read so they could have clued me in to these secrets. Because it shouldn't be secret! I will share this with everyone I know. Pay for it, get it free online, whatever. Just read it.
